Event description

Description

Every year archaeologists create a wealth of data about Scotland's heritage but are we realising its potential? This event explores some ongoing projects aimed at creating added value from data.

  • Historic Environment Scotland, Archaeology Scotland and the Archaeology Data Service are working together to streamline reporting processes though a combined Discovery and Excavation in Scotland / OASIS form. Come and have a sneak preview of the new form and find out how reporting your project online can help answer questions in the Regional Research Frameworks developed by ScARF.

  • Although archaeology relies heavily on location, we consistently fail to realise the potential of the spatial data we collect. This data is all too often fossilised in the pages of a PDF making it difficult to reuse – particularly in a GIS. The benefits of, as well as the barriers to, taking a fresh approach to reporting spatial data are discussed and participants are encouraged to share their views.

  • Following an update on archiving at HES, we will look at doing more with existing data sources. The House Age Project explores automatically extracting building footprints from digital copies of historic OS maps. The RAMP project discusses using the Scottish Government Airborne Laser Scanning data to identify archaeological features through the Rapid Archaeological Mapping Programme.
