Drawing your world- An Absolute Beginners Course for the Terrified!

Do you have a secret desire to draw but don’t know where to begin? Haven't drawn since your schooldays? Frightened of messing it up? Had a go, then thought it looked like a child's drawing.? Well the truth is - if you haven't drawn since school it will look like a child has drawn it -as it takes practice!

Come along and join International Artist Linda Hollingshead, well known for her friendly, inspirational and enjoyable courses and workshops, for this easy to follow course. With over 25 years of teaching experience, Linda has met many stuck, frightened to begin artists, who through gentle coaxing and guidance have managed to not only make a pencil mark on the paper. But go on to relax, enjoy and create pictures they are proud of. Drawing is wonderful for your well- being as the focus is a light relief from other concerns.

Welcome to this 6 week Thursday afternoon course, beginning on Thursday 18 September 2025 (1pm - 3pm) and concluding on Thursday 23 October 2025 (1pm - 3pm).

Through drawing demonstrations and easy to follow step by step practical drawing exercises to learn techniques, practice and build drawing confidence. The course builds session on session until you are completing full drawings. You will come away with an easy to understand and apply drawing process to draw the world around you. Linda shows how to simplify your subject and use techniques to create successful results.

What is covered each week…

Week 1

An introduction to drawing including materials and their uses. Showing ways to work with a range of pencils. A play session of mark making to see how to work with hard and soft pencils.

We create simple shapes and shading.

Week 2

Looks at a variety of shapes and shading including how to move from 2 Dimension drawing to 3D looking drawings which make things look real. We practice drawing a variety of everyday objects. Using pencil to create light, shade and highlights. As well as creating texture and how to describe the surface of objects.

Week 3

This week shows an easy way to measure and look at proportions when drawing objects and how to draw objects in relation to others. Often known as the ‘Rule of Thumb.’

Week 4

Using measuring again we cover ‘Artist's Eye Perspective’- a quick simple method and less mathematical than draughtsmen's perspective. We draw man-made objects and simple buildings.

Week 5

Is all about Natural forms and landscapes. How to create the feeling of space and depth in a drawing by introducing a foreground middle ground and background to your work.

Week 6

Working from photographs this week brings all the techniques and drawing process together so on completion you come away with a drawing method to apply to any subject.

A recap, Q&A session and round up of the course provides tips and inspirations for continuing further with your drawing practice.

Linda is on hand throughout to offer help tips and advice where needed.

The Craft House was established in 2016 in Saltaire by April Chamberlain, who continues to manage the business. Having started in Saltaire, The Craft House is now run from new, larger, premises at 109-111 Main Street, Bingley. We have a lovely ground floor cafe and welcoming workshop spaces on the first floor (reached by stairs with two handrails). We offer a vibrant programme of art, craft and textile workshops and courses for adults, enabling you to develop existing skills as well as try new activities. Working closely with a team of talented artist/maker tutors, we provide expertly-run classes in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. We cater for a range of skill levels, from first-time participants to people with existing skills (including other professional artists and makers looking to develop their techniques). Our emphasis is on encouraging creativity and enjoyment whilst passing on key skills. We also cater for private parties and events - please telephone us or call into the cafe to discuss. Please note that all our events are subject to us achieving minimum booking requirements, as we need to ensure they are commercially viable for our tutors - if we have to cancel an event, we will refund your ticket and give you as much notice as possible.
