Drawing Club: Risograph Workshop with Adam Shield

Drawing Room explores ideas around contemporary drawing and makes them visible in the public domain. As the only public and non-profit gallery in the UK and Europe dedicated to contemporary drawing, Drawing Room provides a unique resource for the promotion of drawing, its practice, theory and methodology.

Drawing Room presents a Christmas-themed Risograph workshop to make cards for your loved ones and learn more about the practice of printing.

Join artist Adam Shield in our Community Studio for a dynamic printing workshop using a Risograph machine.Workshop participants will use the Risograph printer to create experimental, brightly coloured prints and cards. Using collaged found materials, plant matter alongside hand drawn elements participants will produce a set of two colour Risograph prints that can be used as seasonal gifts or cards. Through a unique process of layering, collage, and drawing participants will get a hands on experience of the fast, inky and analogue Riso print making methods. About the ArtistAdam Shield (born 1988) is an artist from Newcastle upon Tyne who lives and works in London. He has exhibited nationally including at the TACO!, Drawing Room, the Showroom (London), the Priestman Gallery, Baltic 39, Belmacz, Royal Academy of Arts, and Glasgow International. He co-runs Long Distance Press with Thomas Whittle. Their public artwork Hand Over Hand in Paddington Square opened in July 2025. He runs Long Distance Press, a collaborative artist publishing project with Thomas Whittle. Shield’s practice is rooted in drawing and DIY publishing. His artistic output encompasses painting, murals, video, animation, publishing, and sound. He often presents his artworks in expansive installations that explore interior worlds and narratives, drawing on a range of popular and subcultural references, from film, music, and dreams to science fiction and comic books.The act of drawing for Shield becomes a form of speculative fiction. Through which his personal encounter with the world and its intersection with the political is processed. For Shield, this is an attempt to fix a view from inside an ever-changing and multiplicitous city. The class will accommodate max. 20 people. It is not required that you bring any materials with you, but you are welcome to do so if you wish.
