DRAWING FROM SHELLS!

Online Live Class: Thursday 25th July, 18:30 BST

+14 DAYS RECORDING ACCESS

Taught by Jo Blaker

Shells offer us a delightful array of forms, surfaces, textures, colours & patterns to enjoy. This session is intended to bring a little bit of seaside delight into your day - even if you live miles from the sea! Grab your shell collection, your sketchbook & drawing materials & draw along with artist Jo Blaker, as she guides you through a series of playful drawing exercises. We will work with our sketchbooks & draw in a range of ways to stimulate our creativity, enhance our observation & most importantly, help us really enjoy our drawing.

You will need your own sea shells to participate in this activity fully - the kind of shell is not important, however the more interesting the form - the more you have to explore in your drawings.

This workshop will suit all levels & abilities.

YOU WILL NEED

  • Your own sea shells
  • Sketchbook: mixed media weight paper - if your sketchbook contains quite lightweight paper, you might want to try using card envelopes & packaging paper instead. Loose cartridge paper will also be fine if you prefer to work that way.
  • White paint: gesso, poster paint, tempera, or gouache are preferable
  • Tool to apply paint - rough bristly paintbrush ideal
  • Coloured drawing media such as - soft pastels (aka chalks), pencil crayons, wax crayons, felt tip pens or oil pastels
  • Other fine tipped drawing materials such as pencil or fineliner pen

Jo will use some Watersoluble drawing materials such as watercolour pencils or crayons so if you own some of these you may want to have these to hand too.

ABOUT OUR TUTOR

Jo Blaker is a visual artist & educator based in Slaithwaite. Jo holds an MA in Visual Communication from the Royal College of Art & shares the playful creativity at the heart of her practice through workshops at some of West Yorkshire’s leading cultural venues. The influence of natural forms, rhythms and cycles can be seen across her work, from large scale freehand window drawings, to greetings card designs & art works on paper. Jo's practice is rooted in observational drawing, working with a wide range of wet & dry drawing media, often in the elements.
