This intensive course is designed for those who want to take their portrait drawing further – adding the complexity and richness of colour. Over five sessions, you’ll build a single, sustained portrait from start to finish using coloured pencil, learning the layered process that Susannah Pal uses in her own work.

Working from a single photographic reference (sent to you in advance), you’ll begin with a detailed graphite drawing before moving into colour – exploring how to create texture, tone, and subtle variation using coloured pencils. Through live demonstrations, detailed explanations, and personal guidance, you’ll gain a deep understanding of how to create luminous, expressive portraits in this versatile medium.

Susannah Pal is an artist and experienced tutor with over a decade of teaching observational drawing. Her calm, supportive teaching style encourages students to find joy in the process and confidence in their own artistic voice.

What You’ll Learn:

• Build a strong graphite foundation, focusing on tone, proportion, and structure
• Create swatches to explore colour mixing, texture, blemishes, and fine detail
• Produce a coloured grisaille under drawing to guide your layering
• Develop a fully realised coloured pencil portrait, using layering techniques to create subtlety and depth
• Gain insight into Susannah’s four-part method, with demonstrations filmed from above and narrated live

• One detailed tonal graphite drawing
• One fully developed coloured pencil portrait

Flexible Learning:

All demonstrations are filmed from above, giving you a clear view of Susannah’s hands as she draws — so you can follow each stage of the process as it unfolds

Each session is recorded and made available to all participants, with one month of access so you can pause, rewind, catch up, or revisit techniques in your own time.
