Drawing Workshop

Drawing Workshop

Overview

An introduction to my reportage illustrations

I'm Niki Groom, an illustrator based in Bristol. During this small group (max 12 people) workshop I'll share my experience of creating on-the-spot reportage illustration at protests, hospitals and festivals.

I'll talk you through my favourite art equipment, show you my sketchbooks and we will discuss what it's important to consider when documenting sensitive scenes.

I'll then do a series of demos and get you drawing, with a focus on how to capture people. The session will be informal and friendly, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

The workshops will take place in Centrespace Gallery where my exhibition of reportage work will hang on the walls around us.

Since documenting sensitive scenes at the Calais 'Jungle' for Choose Love in 2016, I have specialised in reportage illustration for the humanitarian and cultural sectors. I’m a trusted member of the local community & have experience of working with grassroots orgs and large corporations. I’ve received training in Trauma-Informed Practice (Unjumble) and Psychological Safety for Journalists (Rory Peck Trust), ensuring a considerate and respectful approach to my work.

No need for any prior experience, though the evening will be especially useful for illustration students and urban sketchers.
