DVRK MASS II Sonic Transformations {Ecosystems}Music and Sonic Studies Manchester (MASSmcr) and the Dark ∀rts Research Kollective (DVRK) at Manchester Metropolitan University, present a collaborative event, showcasing groundbreaking new music and sonic experiments with the launch of the MASSmcr sonic manifesto.We’re delighted to be able to platform developing projects from several pioneering artists from the North West and beyond:<ul><li>Katie Chatburn - composer, sonic artist, Leverhulme doctoral scholar at Manchester Met.</li><li>Lois MacDonald - SODA lecturer and experimental musician (Pins &amp; Grave Goods)</li><li>Caro C - founder of the charity <a href="https://deliaderbyshireday.com/" title="https://deliaderbyshireday.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Delia Derbyshire Day</a> and electronic musician</li><li>Rosie Middleton - Mezzo-soprano, collaborative artist and PhD candidate at the RNCM and Sociology Manchester Met.</li><li>Maya Chowdhry, Antony Hall and Christopher Gladwin all DVRK members and affiliated with the School of Digital Arts (SODA).</li></ul>As well as representing innovative musical and sonic works in their own right, each performance will explore the event’s broader theme {ecosystems}.While societies are experiencing rapid social transformations which amplify conflict and dislocation, we engage with Sonic Transformations that highlight the interdependence of human culture, flora and fauna, social systems, mycelium networks and other worlds. Expect vital new sounds, boundary-pushing performances, and mushroom music.We want YOU to collaborate with US and take relational action. Welcome to DVRK MASS II. Following a 'sold out' performance/rave for Manchester Histories 2024 both research groups are once more joining forces to remix their unique flavours of music and sonic experimentations to celebrate the launch of MASSmcr's Sonic Manifesto with a sociology of sound. This is  a call to make sound central to our communities, practices, cultures and relationships, to recognise the sonic interconnectedness of human and non-human worlds.

Sonic Manifesto

 This performance gives agency to the audience through the creation of a sonic hetereotopia, an imagined space that allows the re-examination of norms and structures and engages with the potential for collective transformation. Led by Katie Chatburn using interactive ‘Flowfal’ technology within a spatialised environment, the audience will construct and manipulate imagined soundscapes, exploring the interdependent relational potentials emergent from re-imagined, co-created sonic space.  30min live electronic music performance using Flowfal technology

Imagined Soundscape: Relocating Sonic Relations

Three artists/musicians (Caro C, Rosie Middleton and Katie Chatburn) employ voice, electronics, cello and found sounds to explore the creative space between themselves and the audience. Improvisation allows them to access vulnerability, open sharing and principles of trust, playfulness and care. The focus is interdependency and the emerging sounds and gestures evolve in relation to one another, the audience and the space, encouraging deeper listening and reciprocity. How does the ecosystem benefit all?  What happens when it is disrupted? How is balance achieved? How can the performer/audience relationship be truly supportive of one another?

The Space Between Us 

Lois Macdonald, a practicing experimental musician and lecturer at the School of Digital Arts (SODA), presents PATIENCE XIV, which explores artificial intelligence and music through innovative compositions examining the boundaries of human and machine creativity. "All consciousness is now PATIENCE"

PATIENCE XIV

A collaborative working formulated by interdisciplinary artists. A vibrational mechanism for the dissolution of boundaries between humanity and nature, animate and inanimate, matter and spirit, mind and body. The ecstatic technology of dance music is used as a carrier signal, encoding elemental forces, sonified biochemical interactions and animal communications. The sub bass bellows of mighty cetaceans, the chatter of mycelial networks, percussive assemblages of chitin, bone, capillary action, fire, water and seismic activity. The dynamism of the biosphere speaking through the mediumship of digital technologies; the cacophonous remodelled into patterned meaning, that the human mind can comprehend. Thus, a bridge is formed into the animistic matrix, and as synaptic channels align to the auditory signal, re-ordering the mind and regulating the body; universal communion can be achieved.
