Yes, this cake works with both gluten containing flour and gluten free flour

I have a nut allergy - can I make this cake

Unfortunately, no. Almonds are a key ingredient in simnel cake. You can however make the fruit cake on it's own and miss out the almond 'marzipan'. It won't be simnel cake but it will be a tasty fruit cake!
