Echo Chamber

In this CREATURE Lab, Manuela Barczewski will present extracts from her ongoing research project Echo Chamber as part of her long-term investigation into the relationship between personal and collective memories of place.

Echo Chamber is Barczewski’s practice-led autobiographical research drawing on the experience of migrants arriving in Germany in the 1960’s and 70’s. The research is centred on the Transit Camp in Unna-Massen, one of the key sites through which newly arrived migrants first encountered the German state. Echo Chamber seeks to construct multimodal methodologies for re-telling migration histories that resist linearity and traditional/conventional story telling. In doing so, it aims to expand the ways in which migration histories are documented and understood.

The project's multiple components - including short video clips, field recordings, performed and recorded musical pieces, artefacts, and found objects - will form part of the final work: an experimental short film. This CREATURE Lab will present selected material generated through the research and creative enquiry undertaken to date, including a live music performance, still and moving images, artefacts, and archival documents. The presentation is intended to invite discussion and feedback that will inform the ongoing development of the project.

Manuela Barczewski is a Senior Lecturer and Art Studio lead on the Foundation course at the School of Art, Architecture and Design, London Metropolitan University. She is a German British multidisciplinary artist, researcher, and voice facilitator whose practice-based research investigates experimental methodologies in media technologies, with the focus on the relationship between personal and collective memories of place. Manuela has exhibited, performed, and presented her work nationally and internationally at institutions and venues including Kunstverein, Cologne, Graw Böckler garageN, Berlin, V&A East Storehouse, Wysing Arts Centre, Café OTO, Whitechapel Gallery, and Union Chapel.
