This course provides an accessible introduction to economics. Delivered fully online in three half-day sessions of 2 1/2 hours each, the course is designed to support your training from your office or home.
The course is aimed at everyone who wants to have a better understanding of economics.
In the first session, the course introduces what the study of economics is about, what questions it seeks to address and how these relate to individuals, businesses, markets and countries. The course discusses the behaviours and decision-making process of individuals, how markets work - competition, demand and supply.
The second session moves on to the role of government, market failure theory and the economics of equity and distribution. We will undertake a special case study of global trade and trade policies, including free trade agreements, tariffs and non-tariff barriers to trade.
In the third session the course focuses on the bigger picture. It discusses fiscal policy, government spending and taxation, and monetary policy – all highly relevant when considering the policy responses to the many economic challenges we currently face. It also introduces the role of technology and the environment in driving productivity growth and sustainable growth.
Who should come?
The course is designed for people who have not studied economics but would like to learn more. It is particularly useful for government analysts (outside economics), and policy and finance professionals who are keen to develop their understanding of economics. It is also ideal for non-economists in consultancies, think tanks or charities who work on policy issues or closely with government and would like to further their knowledge. It does not require any prior knowledge of economics or mathematics.
The course includes interactive exercises and case studies to help illustrate key concepts and ensure the course is engaging and relevant.
Key learning outcomes
The course will give you the tools to effectively understand, participate in and review economic analysis. In particular, you will:
- gain a solid understanding of relevant terminology such as opportunity cost, market failure, industrial structure and competition, fiscal and monetary policy;
- develop an appreciation of how economic thinking shapes decisions, with reference to fiscal and monetary responses to the crisis and;
- gain confidence in discussions on economics or with economists, including with senior decision makers and Ministers.

The course is delivered fully online over three half-day sessions. It will be presented by Catherine Connolly from economicsense and is highly interactive with whiteboards, chats, Q&A and surveys. A copy of the slides will be circulated after the course.

The tutor
Catherine Connolly is the founder of economicsense, a specialist economics training provider. Catherine is also on the Council of the Society of Professional Economists, and teaches economics at Leeds University and Queen Mary University of London.
Since establishing economicsense in 2018, Catherine has taught hundreds of professionals in government ministries, corporates and regulators across the UK, delivering both online and in direct training sessions. Catherine has also provided technical assistance to international economic institutions.
Prior to setting up economicsense, Catherine was in the British Civil Service where she was a member of the Government Economic Service and the Senior Civil Service. She worked at HM Treasury, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), and at the former Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). She has also worked for Deutsche Bank in Frankfurt, the New Zealand Treasury and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. In these roles Catherine worked on a wide range of economic topics covering macroeconomic forecasting, globalisation, monetary policy and cost-benefit analysis, the latter including working on the 2018 edition of HM Treasury’s Green Book.
Catherine studied at Otago University in New Zealand, where she gained a post-graduate honours degree, specialising in macro-economics.
