This half-day workshop and book launch is aimed to foster engagement amongst scholars of education, mobilities and migration. Based on a series of short papers and workshop discussions, the event will showcase the research and teaching within the School of Education at the University of Glasgow, inviting students and guests to consider the ‘problem’ of migration for education – at various scales. The papers will offer diverse perspectives on the ways in which migration and mobility are shaping different educational contexts and experiences. They consider the importance of local, regional and national mobilities and the embedding of internationalism within teaching in higher education; refugee migration and inter-cultural and language learning; and the experiences of international study for different stakeholders. The event will, thus, appeal to those working and studying within and outside of the School of Education and the University of Glasgow. Tickets are limited. The workshop discussions will be led by the following papers:Dr Bonnie Slade Building an International Joint Master in Adult Education for Social ChangeThe International Master in Adult Education for Social Change (IMAESC) (Erasmus Mundus) is a funded Joint Masters Degree programme offered in partnership between the University of Glasgow, the University of Malta, the Open University of Cyprus, Tallinn University and Universiti Sains Malaysia. This paper offers a reflection on internationalisation in higher education, specifically exploring issues related to student mobility.Dr Giovanna Fassetta Establishing connections. The Online Arabic from Palestine language course and potential for ‘linguistic hospitality’ in ScotlandThis presentation discusses the process of online collaboration to design an Online Arabic language course. Funded by the AHRC under their GCRF scheme, the project resulted in the Online Arabic from Palestine language course. The international and multilingual project was based in the School of Education, University of Glasgow (UK) and in the Gaza Strip (Palestine). A team of academics, teachers, administrators, IT experts, videographers and graphic designers worked online to circumvent the blockade of the Gaza Strip in order to collaboratively design and develop an online Arabic course for beginners (a) grounded in Palestinian culture, history, language and art; (b) tailor-made for online delivery from the challenging context of the Gaza Strip; (d) holistic - i.e. focusing not just on language for communication but also on the emotional and aesthetic dimensions of language. The Online Arabic from Palestine course is now taught by trained and experienced teachers based at the Arabic Center (Islamic University of Gaza http://arabic.iugaza.edu.ps/) and makes use of the bespoke interactive materials created by the international team of language experts. It offers Gaza’s graduates a way to earn some much-needed income through online work and also a chance to relieve the isolation they experience. The presentation will also illustrate a new proposal that aims to link the Online Arabic from Palestine course and the New Scots Refugee Integration Strategy for 2018-2020. It will discuss how ‘linguistic hospitality’ can be a way to welcome refugees and thus effectively facilitate integration as a two-way process. Dr Dely Elliot What role do I play? Revisiting the opportunities and complexities inherent in international education International students are very much part of the university experience. Drawing upon a psychological framework based on Urie Bronfenbrenner’s bio-ecological theory, this paper primarily focuses on the distinctive processes entailed in an educational sojourn. Featuring selected vignettes, the paper will highlight the strengths (e.g. strong transnational knowledge) as well as the challenges (e.g. differing academic culture and practices) that international students typically bring and/or experience. In revisiting both opportunities and challenges surrounding the sojourn, the aim is to stimulate a critical discussion on postgraduate students’ experience of being educated abroad and what this means for a) international students themselves; b) for domestic students; c) for members of staff; c) for the student community; d) the curriculum; and e) for the wider university support provision. Each stakeholder’s potentially crucial role towards a more meaningful and satisfying experience for all concerned will be explored.Dr Kirsty Finn &amp; Dr Mark HoltonAfter years of austerity, mounting student debts and differential tuition fees in different parts of the union, student geographies in the UK have taken on an increasingly regional dimension. Specifically, there has been an increase in the number of full-time UK living-at-home (LAH) students who commute to participate in higher education rather than relocate. This has led to renewed interest in what this means for the authenticity of student experiences and associated feelings of belonging. In this presentation we reflect on research with LAH students at two English universities . We question the extent to which LAH students are 'immobile' and the notion that they are present a problem for policy makers and educators. Drawing on arguments from our new book, we challenge dominant conceptualisations of belonging and offer new theoretical tools for making sense of contemporary experiences of (dis)connection and (im)mobility in (higher) education. These tools are generated through a spatio-temporal analysis which draws upon theory from the mobilities turn, advancing the particular concepts of rhythm and dance. This approach makes significant contributions to the sociology of higher education. We conclude that contrary to popular understandings, the everyday (im)mobilities of LAH students are not antithetical to belonging but instead become part of a choreographic process through which attachments and investments are performed, resisted and made meaningful. After the interactive discussion sessions there will be short presentation by our guest, Dr Johanna Waters to launch a new book, Everyday Mobile Belonging followed by a wine reception and networking.
