About the presenter

With thirty years experience working in the fields learning disabilities and autistic spectrum conditions, Andy Hodkin brings his experience, skills and knowledge to this course.

Having managed in social work teams, residential units and short breaks units for both children and adults, and piloting projects with the NHS on Autism and Mental Health, Andy has gained a unique appreciation of the importance of Effective Communication.

He has worked directly with children and adults with learning disabilities and autisitc spectrum conditions for his whole career and continues to do so up to the present day.

A recognised and award-winning advocate of Working Together, Andy has managed in services with multiple Ofsted Outstanding ratings and has provided expert consultancy and reviews to Local Authority disability services.

With degrees in Social Work and Childhood Studies, and training delivery in Intensive Interaction, Signs of Safety and Communication, Andy has delivered successful training courses to clients such as Girlguiding UK Headquarters, Zurich Insurance, Isle of Man Airport, Nottingham University, Manx Care and the London Institute of Banking & Finance.

How it works

When you have bought your ticket you will receive a link to access the online session. You do not need to download Zoom to access the meeting (although it is recommended for a clear connection) and you can access the meeting either on your laptop or your phone.

When the session is due to start- simply click on the link in the confirmation e-mail you will be sent and you will be admitted into the virtual classroom.

In the session we will look at the eight areas covered in the Disability Awareness course- 'Effective Communication for Autism and/or Learning Disabilities'

At the end of the session there will be an opportunity for any attendees to stay online if they wish for a discussion and opportunity to share experiences, tips and advice.

Who is the course for

This course has been designed for any individuals who engage with people living with learning disabilities, and for those who may have addtioanl autistic spectrum conditions.

If you are a parent or carer, or you work or volunteer in health, education, youth work, emergency services, charity sector, social care or social work- this course will enhance your communication skills and empower your every interaction.
