EG THREAD TALKS: Lucy Barter: Victorian Needlework

During the Victorian period needlework saw the greatest changes in design, technique, materials, threads and dyes used. The introduction of the sewing machine, which revolutionized both domestic and commercial sewing. Embroidery skills were vital for practical “plain sewing” and decorative “fancy work” signifying the status of the embroiderer, or providing an income. It was a rich art form used on everything in the home to military uniforms.

In this talk we explore the diverse styles from, the ever so popular Berlin Wool Work and the Arts and Crafts movement to the schemes set up for wounded soldiers like the Soldiers Embroidery Industry, to find out how the Victorians shaped Needlework for all.

This talk is in collaboration with The Fusilier Museum Warwick who are holding an exhibition Following Threads: Exploring Regimental embroidery in the Victorian Age 28 Jan to 11 April. The exhibition explores embroidery work undertaken by members of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment during the late Victorian period. Lucy Barter is the co-founder of former San Francisco School of Needlework and Design. Before opening the school, Lucy was proprietor of her own business, Forever Embroidery Studio. Lucy created a Goldwork Embroidery class for the online craft forum Craftsy, and served as the US Course Coordinator and instructor for the Royal School of Needlework.

In 2006, Lucy graduated from the Royal School of Needlework Apprenticeship Programme, and holds a BA Honors Degree in Fashion Design. With a passion to teach and share the beauty of embroidery and needlework, after 25 years in the US, Lucy is now working on a new solo venture.
