EG THREAD TALKS: Wendy Dolan: A Change of Scale
Overview
Commissioned work can be both exciting and challenging. In this talk, Wendy will discuss the stages involved, including initial artist / client contacts, brief, design approval, ordering materials, planning the work schedule and working through to completion.
This will be supported with examples of her own commissions, from church pulpit falls, and wedding dresses, to embroidered stage curtains and wall hung textiles up to 13 m. x 4.5 m.
This ticket is for the live event on 5 March. You will also be given access to the recording once it is available and will be able to view it for at least 6 weeks after the event. If you cannot attend live, register for the On Demand version here where the recording will be available from 19 March.

Wendy Dolan is a UK contemporary textile artist with a B.Ed. Hons degree in Art and Textiles and a Diploma in Creative Stitched Textiles from Brighton University. She is a Fellow of the Society of Designer Craftsmen and a member of The Sussex Guild of Craftsmen.
In her work, Wendy explores the world around her. Living and working close to the South Downs in Sussex, she explores the contrasting textures found in the landscape, natural forms, trees and architectural elements. She records her observations in sketchbooks, making marks to capture the essence of the subject.
Wendy has always enjoyed the hands-on sensual quality of working with fabrics and threads and combines several techniques including painting, printing and hand and machine stitching. Fabrics are pieced, layered and stitched together, building up interesting backgrounds and creating richly textured surfaces which are then painted and embellished with stitch.
In her series ‘A Sense of Place’ Wendy incorporates transfer printed maps which are then illustrated with architectural or natural features associated with the area.
She has work in several public collections, including a large commission which was completed in 2000 for Ashridge Management Development Centre, Hertfordshire (8m x 3m) and two large stage curtains for Royal Caribbean International Cruise ships (13.5m x 4.5m)
An experienced tutor and lecturer, Wendy offers talks and workshops both nationally and internationally, and leads textile tours to India and Central Asia, with Aahilya Holidays.
Her work can be seen in various publications including her book ‘Layer, Paint and Stitch’, which is on the Search Press bestseller list.
“There is nothing more satisfying than something you have created yourself and I hope that my artwork and teaching will encourage others to share my passion for textiles.”
