<H2>Eldis 20th Anniversary Workshop: Learning from 20 years of digital knowledge sharing for global development</H2>
 
<H2>Who is the event for?</H2>
The event is targeted at knowledge brokers, communications professionals, librarians and researchers with an interest in how digital technologies and online spaces support knowledge generation, sharing and use in the context of global social and economic development.
<H2>What will the event consist of?</H2>
<H3>Thursday 15th September</H3>
The first day will be in seminar format with invited keynote speakers and panel sessions. The agenda will be framed around the broad question “What have we learned from 20 years of online knowledge sharing for global development and what does this tell us about the future?” See below for a more detailed outline of the topics.
An informal networking event (including dinner) and celebration of the Eldis 20th Anniversary will be held on the evening of the first day.
<H3>Friday 16th September</H3>
The second day will be facilitated in an “unconference” style format allowing participants to identify and explore in more depth some of the issues and opportunities that have emerged from discussions on the first day. The programme will be finalised during the workshop itself but if you have ideas for sessions you would like to run then please get in touch.
<H3>Parallel events</H3>
As part of the workshop we are also very pleased to be hosting the annual meeting of the <A HREF="http://www.eadi.org/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">EADI</A> Information Managers Working Group and the partners meeting for <A HREF="http://www.dgroups.info/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">DGroups</A>. Both will be running sessions at the event that are open to any workshop participants who would like to find out more about these networks. 
DGroups will also be holding their business meeting at IDS in advance of the workshop on Wednesday 14th September and will host an informal pre-workshop gathering for everyone arriving on Wednesday- details to follow. 
A parallel “Share Fair” giving participants the opportunity to showcase their own work will run concurrently across both days of the workshop. <H2>WHAT TOPICS WILL THE WORKSHOP COVER?</H2>
The agenda for sessions on the first day will be structured around three overlapping topic areas:
What are the global trends and technology drivers that will shape the future of digital knowledge sharing?
The UN has emphasised the importance of local knowledge and the need for a “data revolution for development” in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. At the same time emerging digital technologies and standards provide huge potential for increasing the visibility and reach of new ideas. But the potential of these new technologies isn’t always accessible to all and, in some cases, could be creating new digital divides that restrict rather than encourage participation from  already marginalised groups.

What are the institutional challenges and opportunities for information management, knowledge brokering and research communications?
The funding landscape for digital knowledge sharing projects, libraries and knowledge management initiatives has become increasingly challenging over the last five years – both at an institutional level and in the wider context of donor grants and research funders. How have institutions responded to these challenges, what are the success stories and what can we learn from this for the future.
Open Access publication of research documents, and increasingly datasets, has become a requirement of many research grants in recent years. This is a victory for many in our sector who have tirelessly advocated for Open Access over many years. But work still remains to be done. Compliance with Open Access mandates remains relatively low and many institutions are poorly equipped to meet open access standards and struggle to adapt their publication processes and business models.

What is the current state-of-the-art in terms of our theoretical understanding of the role we play in sharing knowledge, promoting learning and informing decision-making?
A continuing challenge and the subject of much discussion in our sector concerns our ability to demonstrate impact, measure effectiveness and articulate the value of the contribution we make to development policy and practice. There have been numerous contributions to our practical understanding and approaches over the years from the application of evaluation frameworks and toolkits such as Outcome Mapping and Theories of Change to the development of qualitative and quantitative indicators and metrics like Stories of Change and Altmetrics. All of this has been underpinned by a more theoretical analysis of the complex mechanics of information-seeking behaviour, learning and decision-making by research programmes like RAPID and communities of practice like KM4Dev. Recently there has been a great deal of cross fertilisation of ideas from other sectors like Health and Climate Change. So what is the current state-of-the-art and how can we collaborate more effectively to share approaches and advocate effectively for the value of our work?

<H2>ABOUT THE VENUE</H2>
The workshop will take place at the <A HREF="http://www.ids.ac.uk/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Institute of Development Studies</A> situated on the leafy campus of the University of Sussex just outside <A HREF="http://www.visitbrighton.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Brighton</A>.
Sitting between the sea and the <A HREF="https://www.southdowns.gov.uk/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">South Downs National Park</A>, and just 1 hour from London by train, Brighton is a great place to visit at any time of year. We highly recommend that you extend your visit to spend a bit of time exploring Brighton and the surrounding area if you can and we hope to organise some informal excursions for participants, on the Saturday following the workshop, to show you some of our favourite places. By happy coincidence our workshop also coincides with the <A HREF="http://brightondigitalfestival.co.uk/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Brighton Digital Festival</A> – an increasingly international celebration of digital culture that takes place across Brighton and Hove every September.
