eLene4Life Knowledge Exchange: Enhancing Soft Skills through Active Learning for Education and Employment

10:00 - 17:00 (CEST)eLene4Life supports curriculum innovation in higher education (HE) and the corporate sector through the development of active learning approaches for transversal skills, with the ultimate aim of improving students’ employability.Conference themes<ul><li>Active Learning</li><li>Soft Skills</li><li>Employability</li></ul>Keynote speakers<a href="https://www.ulster.ac.uk/staff/rtg-beggs" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Richard Beggs</a> (Lecturer in Education Practice), Ulster University and Chair of the  <a href="https://www.alt.ac.uk/groups/special-interest-groups/active-learning-sig" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">ALT Active Learning SIG</a>Institutional approach to adopting Active/Collaborative Learning in Higher EducationThis session will explore Ulster University’s Learning landscapes activities as it moves towards an Active/Collaborative approach to learning and teaching across its campuses. Richard Beggs, Learning Landscapes lead at Ulster University will give a brief overview of the Learning Environment plan, the Ulster context and the learning and teaching initiatives, such as Apps for Active Learning, Active Learning Champions and Student Learning Partners that have facilitated this holistic approach to embedding active and collaborative learning in academic practice.After working as a graphic and interactive designer in Belfast, Richard started down the educational technology path in 2002 when he began working in BBC NI Education. In 2006 Richard joined Ulster University in their Online Masters team advising on best practice in online and blended delivery, electronic assessment and feedback and digital enhancement. Richard joined the CHERP team as a Lecturer in Higher Education Practice in 2017 where he leads the Learning Landscapes project. He is an advocate of digital storytelling as an assessment tool and has brought this to Undergrad and Postgrad teaching at Ulster University. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a certified member of ALT, a Distinguished Learning and Teaching Support Fellow and was a shortlisted finalist for ALT’s Learning Technologist of the Year in both 2017 and 2020 and the Irish Education Awards in 2019. Richard has presented at national conferences in UK and Ireland on flipped learning, apps in education, active learning and digital storytelling and is the Chair of the ALT Active Learning Special Interest Group.<a href="http://www.open.ac.uk/people/bcr58" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Bart Rienties</a> (Professor in Learning Analytics), Open UniversityAttitudes to active learning: A global comparisonLearning in the 21st century is undergoing both subtle and radical transformation as a result of the impact of digital, networked technologies. Open learning gives unprecedented access to knowledge, information and education and provides support to learners across the globe. However, it is not the technologies themselves that represent the biggest change, but the opportunities for openness that flow from their thoughtful application, in the form of availability of and access to formal and informal learning. Indeed our research at the Institute of Educational Technology and the Open University shows that several groups of learners appreciate and benefit from working with active learning approaches, while others struggle. In this keynote I will critically discuss some of the common approaches of active learning, while also highlighting which groups of learners might be left behind by some of these active learning approaches.Dr. Bart Rienties is Professor of Learning Analytics and programme lead of the learning analytics and learning design research programme at the Institute of Educational Technology at the Open University UK. He leads a group of academics who provide university-wide learning analytics and learning design solutions and conduct evidence-based research of how students and professionals learn. As educational psychologist, he conducts multi-disciplinary research on work-based and collaborative learning environments and focuses on the role of social interaction in learning, which is published in leading academic journals and books.Call for lightning session contributionsIt has been well established that to enhance the employability of graduates more has to be done to help students develop the transversal skills that are required in the workplace. This conference is an opportunity to share best practice about how this is being achieved in Higher Education. If you have an interest in graduate employment, integrating soft skills into your curriculum, using innovative interactive teaching approaches then please share your practice via a lightnin’ session at this online conference.
