Practical Workshop: Creating Dynamic Design with Hand Painted Silks

Thursday 25 April, 9.30am-5pm at Cobden Works, Salford

Ali Pretty, the founding member and artistic director of international outdoor arts company Kinetika will lead this day-long practical masterclass where you will have the opportunity to get hands on with creating and painting spectacular designs on silk for use as banners or costumes in outdoor performance.

More about Ali:

Ali has collaborated with, and led teams of artists, to deliver large-scale events to diverse audiences all over the world. Her artistic direction and her hand-painted silk designs are renowned for their quality, both in their individual style as well as their ability to engage and leave lasting legacies in communities and individuals alike. Through these projects Ali brings people together by walking, talking and painting large-scale silk creations.

Kinetika is an internationally renowned company with a 21-year track record of combining world-class design with community projects to produce spectacular outdoor events that engage diverse audiences wherever they work. From local community events in shopping centres, ceremonial boulevards and local high streets, to the Great Wall of China and the heart of Kolkata. Kinetika has also been commissioned to create work for ceremonies at high profile events including FIFA World Cup 2009, the London Paralympic games/Team GB Parade in 2012 and the European Games 2015.

Cost
£50 per person - please select the 'paid' ticket option when booking your place. This masterclass has been subsidised by Arts Council England and spaces are limited.

There are four free bursary places available to those who would not be able to attend otherwise. Please choose the ‘requested bursary’ ticket option.
Please complete the additional question when booking - making a case for why you need a bursary.

The ability to apply for these bursary places will close at 9am on Monday 8th April.

These will then be assessed by the team and you will be notified of the outcome of your application by Friday 12th April.

The masterclass is designed for North West artists and creatives, especially those interested in outdoor arts practice.

ELEVATE’19 Spring Masterclasses: Outdoor Arts Performance

Now in its seventh year, ELEVATE is a creative practitioner and community leader development programme, for curious creative adventurers, wanting to gain and share know-how in outdoor arts. ELEVATE masterclasses offer practical workshops and stimulating talks by international and nationally significant outdoor artists – people Walk the Plank think we as a UK sector can benefit from meeting and learning from.

Our spring ELEVATE '19 masterclasses will focus on performance for outdoor arts.

Our spring programme not only provides great value for money learning opportunities for creative practitioners interested in performance in the outdoor arts, but also provides the chance to work with some leading names in event and parade design along with puppet making, silk painting for costumes and banners. And finally, if you’re eager to find new ways of incorporating recyclable materials into your work, we have a wonderful new masterclass that with equip you with some smart skills and ideas on how to make your practice more sustainable.

Bursaries

Thanks to our Bursary scheme we are able to offer a number of free or subsidised classes. You can apply for up to three bursaries during our spring season, but we can only award one per creative practitioner. In other words, if you are unsuccessful in applying for a bursary for one class, you can apply for another.

The purpose of bursaries is to make classes accessible to as many people as possible, so if cost is a genuine barrier to you taking part, or this masterclass is pivotal to your professional development please explain this when applying. You’ll find details on how to apply next to each masterclass. Applications for a free or subsidised place are assessed on an individual basis and you will be notified within two weeks of the date of the class on whether your application has been successful.
