Brighton Jazz Festival 2023 will return to Brighton’s iconic Palace Pier with four days of world class
music featuring an amazing array of international jazz artists from the deep tradition to the cutting edge.

8pm - Emma Rawicz Emma Rawicz is a multi-award winning young saxophonist and composer, making waves on the UK music scene and beyond She has been described as "An astonishing new talent" (Jamie Cullum – BBC Radio 2), 'a force to be reckoned with' (Jazzwise) and 'a fast-rising star' (London Jazz News). At the age of 21 she has already recorded and released an eagerly awaited debut album ‘Incantation’ made up entirely of her original compositions. In April 2023 Emma signed to major European Jazz label ACT and Emma’s second album, Chroma, recorded in summer 2022 with an all-star band will be released by ACT in August 2023. Emma has created a name for herself both as a bandleader and a sideman. A relatively new arrival on the scene, she has already made an impact, regularly playing at major London jazz venues such as Ronnie Scott’s, The Jazz Café and Pizza Express both as a band leader and as a sideman with a wide range of established musicians. In November 2022 Emma performed as a featured soloist with the BBC Concert Orchestra and the Marcin Wasilewski Trio in their tribute to Tomasz Stańko. 2022 also saw Emma and her band invited to perform at some high profile international jazz festivals.Emma is a recipient of the 2021 Drake Yolanda Award, winner of ‘Best Newcomer’ at the 2022 Parliamentary Jazz Awards and nominee for the 2022 Jazz FM ‘Instrumentalist of the year and finalist in BBC Young Jazz Musician 2022.Growing up in rural North Devon, Emma didn't discover jazz until the age of 15, and didn't pick up a tenor saxophone until a year later, but had spent her childhood otherwise immersed in largely folk and classical music.Emma is a natural performer. Founded by trombonist Viva Msimang, the project started with one simple aim: to explore the spaces between Afro-Latin music and Jazz, while reflecting on themes of sisterhood and female empowerment. Today, COLECTIVA perform in sextet or quintet format, while membership of the collective represents a broader group of the UK’s top female Latin and Jazz instrumentalists. Together, they have birthed a sound affectionately dubbed jazz tropicaliente (hot-tropical-jazz), rich in bold horn lines, jazz harmony and Afro-Latin groove. COLECTIVA have performed at iconic venues nationally and internationally, including sold out shows at Jazz Cafe, Barbican Centre, and Royal Albert Hall. They have performed at SXSW (Texas, USA), Music Meeting (Netherlands), Le Petit Halle (Paris, France), and at Kings Place and Southbank Centre, joining lineups curated by Nubya Garcia, Jazz Re:Freshed, Soho Radio, Glastonbury Festival and Worldwide FM amongst other notable figures on the UK Jazz and Latin scenes. In June 2023, COLECTIVA performed several shows at Glastonbury Festival, including one performance of their latest single How Do You Like Your Ladies? for BBC2, which aired live on national television as part of their coverage of the festival. Released in September 2022 with UK Jazz mainstays Jazz Re:Freshed, How Do You Like Your Ladies? channels the group’s collective frustration at patriarchy and its discontents in the form of a 3-minute instrumental and accompanying music video, rich in Afro-Latin rhythm, Salsa influences and rebel energy. Their debut single, ‘Under The’, released in 2021 on Movimientos, was written in collaboration with jazz pianist Maria Grapsa. ‘Under The’ received huge global radio plays and DJ support from Cerys Matthews, Huey Morgan and Jamz Supernova on 6 Music, Jazz FM’s Chris Philips and Tim Garcia, and Toshiro Matsuura and Papaoul on Worldwide FM, amongst many others. Premiering on Sounds and Colours magazine, the track was supported by Women in Jazz, and was playlisted on Spotify playlists including Music is My Sanctuary’s Jazz - Future Classics, and Colectivo Futuro’s Music Worth Sharing.
