Emotional Learning Cards Workshop Series: Exploring Difference: Reflections on Identity

Iniva (Institute of International Visual Arts) is a leading UK contemporary visual arts organisation which creates exhibitions, publications, digital initiatives, education and research projects. Iniva explores the politics of race and global identities through the visual arts to challenge the status quo. Iniva was established in 1994 to address an imbalance in the representation of culturally diverse artists, curators and writers.Iniva also runs the Stuart Hall Library, which was renamed in 2007 in honour of the renowned cultural theorist and inaugural chair of our board. The development of the collection takes Hall’s work as a guiding principle, and in keeping with this, the library collects around art which takes issues such as cultural identity as its theme. The book collection includes over 10,000 volumes. The library holds over 4,000 group exhibition catalogues, 3,500 works on individual artists, and 2,500 contextual, historical or theoretical works as well as over 200 periodical titles and over 200 zines.Iniva is a registered charity and an Arts Council England National Portfolio organisation.

In September Iniva Creative Learning continues our Emotional Learning Cards workshop programme. This series will be  facilitated by Georgina Evans, art psychotherapist. Georgina was born in Nigeria and is of mixed heritage. Exploring ideas relating to how our identity is shaped by conscious and unconscious influences has always been of key interest to her both as an artist and a creative therapist.
The workshop series is open to all and will introduce ways to open up important conversations about class, culture, gender and race. The workshops will include ‘hands on’ exploration of key themes and art exercises. For those working in the field, these can be adapted for use in group or individual sessions with all ages.  
Workshop Themes:

Who are we in our family, social and work life? How might ethnicity, class, and race influence these identities? How fluid are they?
</LI>

How do gender and sexuality shape our perception of self and other? To what extent has our family history or culture informed our understanding of gender and sexuality for better or worse?

In what ways do the stories we tell ourselves about who we are limit who we are and who we can become? How is this impacted by the stories others tell about us? How can these stories be re-framed so that they inspire us?
</LI>

Workshop participants will be given handouts including suggestions for practical activities and discussion points to take away linked to our Emotional Learning Cards. Sets can be purchased at a discount during the series.

Emotional Learning Cards feature images of international contemporary art together with questions and suggestions for activity and discussion. They are a fantastic means through which to open up important personal and social conversations with young people but can equally be used as a refreshing introduction to contemporary art.
