The London Political Theory Network will host scholars to explore themes of colonialism, imperial legacy, and anticolonial resistance.

Senate House Building

The event will take place from 3-5pm in Senate House, Room 104. SENATE-104. A spring social with light snacks and beverages will follow from 5-6:30pm in Senate House. Paul Apostolidis will chair a panel to discuss themes of empire, resistance, and struggles for freedom. Panelists will give short presentations followed by an open Q&amp;A and discussion. Bios are below. ChairPaul Apostolidis is Professor in the Department of Government at the LSE. His most recent book is The Fight for Time: Migrant Day Laborers and the Politics of Precarity (Oxford University Press 2019).PanelistsArturo Chang, “Indigenous Sovereignty and the Construction of Postcolonial Citizenship in the Andes"Arturo Chang is Assistant Professor of Political Theory in the Department of Political Science at the University of Toronto. His book, 'New World' Nation-Building: Hemispheric Revolution and the Postcolonial Dimensions of American Political Thought (Princeton University Press), examines the importance of hemispheric vernaculars among Indigenous, Black, and Mestizo revolutionaries throughout the Americas. Onur Ulas Ince, “Empire, Capital, and Race”Onur Ulas Ince, is Associate Professor of Political Theory at SOAS and 2024 British Academy/Leverhulme Senior Research Fellow. He is the author of the award-winning book, Colonial Capitalism and the Dilemmas of Liberalism, and of articles published in American Political Science Review, The Journal of Politics, Political Theory, and History of Political Thought, among others. He is currently writing a second monograph entitled Before the Global Color Line: Empire, Capital, and Race in Asia, 1800-1850. Kimberly Hutchings, “What is emancipatory political theory today?”Kimberly Hutchings is Professor of Politics and International Relations at Queen Mary University of London. Her most recent books include Violence and Political Theory (with Elizabeth Frazer) (2020) and Women’s International Thought: towards a new canon (Co-Editor with Patricia Owens, Katharina Rietzler and Sarah Dunstan) which won the International Studies Association Award for best edited volume in 2022 and the British International Studies Susan Strange Award, 2023. Ẹniọlá Ṣóyẹmí, "A Complete Humanity: the Morality of Treating Others as Themselves"Ẹniọlá Ṣóyẹmí is Senior Research Fellow in Political Philosophy and Public Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government at the University of Oxford. Her first book, Law's Moral Legitimacy: On Participation, Freedom, and Political Justice, is forthcoming with Hart/Bloomsbury Publishing. The book provides a novel understanding of law’s authority and its moral legitimacy that accounts as equally for non-settler post-colonial societies as it does for the case of settler societies and former colonial powers, which have traditionally occupied the attention of legal philosophers
