Empowering Design Practicesis a research project exploring how community-led design can help empower those who look after historic places of worship to create more open, vibrant and sustainable places that respect and enhance their heritage.Working within this context, the project aims to develop insights and mechanisms (approaches, resources, training) to support community-led design and the development of places that connect and serve their communities.Empowering Design Practices (2014-2020) is a collaboration between The Open University, The Glass-House Community Led Design, Historic England, National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Historic Religious Buildings Alliance, working with consultants Stephen Smith (Wright & Wright Architects), Leo Care (Live Works) and Becky Payne.The project is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, under the Connected Communities and Design highlight notice.The full name of the project is Empowering Design Practices: historic places of worship as catalysts for connecting communities

Join us to explore and celebrate the role of communities in shaping sustainable futures for historic places of worship.

St Paul's Hammersmith

Empowering Design Practices LIVE will create a space for discussion and for sharing stories, as well as present the learning and resources developed through the five-year Empowering Design Practices research project. We will be sharing approaches to supporting community leadership and engagement in the design and adaptation of faith buildings. The event will include opportunities for knowledge exchange and networking between community groups, professionals and organisations that work in the fields of faith, heritage, architecture and community development and will facilitate the development of ideas and propositions for the future. Welcome from 9:30 for a prompt start at 10:00. Drinks reception and interactive project showcase from 17:30 till 19:00.The event is free but places are limited. Some travel bursaries are available for those most in need. If you are interested, please contact us to discuss: empoweringdesign@gmail.com.St Paul's Hammersmith is an accessible venue, located only a 4 minute walk away from Hammersmith underground station (Piccadilly and District tube lines). <h3>Please note</h3>During the event we will be recording activities and artefacts (via audio, video and photography) in order to share the proceedings and learning with others, during and after the event. These will be shared via social media, publications and our project website.
