About this event

Be inspired by the colourful letterforms of Fairground Art to design and paint a house number sign or individual letterform to decorate your home or for a special gift.

Based in an artists studio you will see examples of heritage Sign Painting and Fairground Art which is currently listed as an 'Endangered Craft' by the UK Heritage Craft organisation.

This is a fun sociable workshop for beginners or experienced painters. You will be guided by experienced art workshop leaders in a step by step process and gain insights into how lettering art is made.

We will begin by drawing an individual letter or number design onto a square shaped, composite aluminium panel, before testing out how it feels to paint with enamel paints. These are durable for outdoor use with bright, lasting colour, making them great for boats, houses or shop signs. Options are to add a second colour 'drop shadow' and learn about contrasting colours that make your letterform stand out.

You will learn how to care for and use sign painting brushes, but feel free to bring your own brushes you feel comfortable using.

If you wish to sketch or print out a number or letterform for your sign- please bring this along. We will show you how to transfer your design onto the aluminium panel - just make sure it is the correct size to fit into a 20cm x 20cm square.

The workshop will take place in an artists studio where you can see other examples of 'Endangered Craft' sign paintings such as Gold Leaf artworks - and hear how they are made.

Workshops will be run in small groups of 5 to give one to one help. Some experience of drawing and painting will helpful, but if you are new to this just keep your design simple - it will be effective with contrasting bright colours!

This workshop is for adults, but anyone sensitive to oil based paints or solvents should not attend. Please note that access to the studio is via stairs only.

We are teacher trained and will tailor the session to your skills. Please let us know in advance if you have any additional learning needs.

This workshop is run by Artist Lisa Wigham as part of The Two a.m. Press Endangered Craft Project supported by The Arts Council of England.
