Learn how geospatial data engineering is being applied to solve a real-world healthcare problem.
The ability of the Public Health Scotland to provide travellers with up-to-date, reliable information on malaria was historically limited by a time-consuming mapping process. Maps were created using a combination of GIS (geographic information systems) and manual drawing, with each country mapped individually. Completing the process could take the best part of a year.
This has now been replaced by a single web map and dashboard that operates globally and can be updated in minutes rather than weeks. The system provides clinicians with current information to support travel health advice, while a web portal also makes the information directly accessible to the public.
Engage with Andrew Gasiorowski as he walks us through the use of Arcade expressions, scalable map components, and a data-driven approach to engineering a global dashboard for Malaria mapping that can be updated in minutes.
The focus will be on the use of Arcade expressions to produce dynamically embedded interpretations, and the journey the team embarked on to deliver a global malaria mapping solution.
Speaker:
- Andrew Gasiorowski - Principal Information Development Manager, Public Health Scotland
Andrew started his career in the NHS (National Health Service) in 2004 and joined NSS (NHS National Services Scotland) as an analyst in 2006. After working on a variety of different projects broadly focusing on Health and Wellbeing profiles, he then pivoted to the role of Data Scientist and GIS Lead. As part of this he focused predominantly on the use of spatial data and how it can be better utilised in health. He has a general interest in technology and acts as a lead for GIS, and is also involved in the development of locally deployed LLMs.
