NAVER LABS Europe (Grenoble, France) is the biggest industrial AI research lab in France with fundamental and applied research in the fields of machine learning and optimization, computer vision, natural language processing and human robot interaction. The main area of application  is  AI for Robotics where they work closely with  NAVER LABS Korea the R&D subsidiary of NAVER, Korea’s leading internet company. Speaker: Hatice Gunes, full professor of Affective Intelligence and Robotics (AFAR) and Director, AFAR Lab, University of Cambridge

Abstract: The majority of research in Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) is concentrated on isolated and brief interactions. Undertaking seemingly repetitive or long-term studies while keeping user interest and involvement intact poses a significant challenge. It requires careful design considerations, creating new algorithms and systems, and dedicating significant resources, especially when using robots in real-world situations.During this talk, my emphasis will be on five key elements that directly influence the success of longitudinal human-robot interactions: embodiment, personality, speech, affect, and learning and adaptation. I will elucidate the challenges and opportunities associated with these five elements in the context of social robotics, supported by various case studies undertaken by the <a href="https://cambridge-afar.github.io/" title="https://cambridge-afar.github.io/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Cambridge Affective Intelligence and Robotics Lab</a>.About the Speaker: <a href="https://www.cst.cam.ac.uk/people/hg410" title="https://www.cst.cam.ac.uk/people/hg410" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Hatice Gunes</a> is a Full Professor of Affective Intelligence and Robotics (AFAR) and the Director of the AFAR Lab at the University of Cambridge's Department of Computer Science and Technology. She is a former President of the Association for the Advancement of Affective Computing (AAAC) and was a Faculty Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute – UK’s national centre for data science and artificial intelligence. Her research focuses on multimodal, social, and affective intelligence for AI systems, particularly embodied agents and robots, by cross-fertilizing research from the fields of Machine Learning, Affective Computing, Social Signal Processing, and Human Nonverbal Behaviour Understanding. She has served as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing, IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, and Image and Vision Computing Journal, and has guest edited many Special Issues, the latest ones being 2022-23 Int’l Journal of Social Robotics Special Issue on Embodied Agents for Wellbeing, 2021-22 Frontiers in Robotics and AI Special Issue on Lifelong Learning and Long-Term Human-Robot Interaction, and 2020-21 IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing Special Issue on Automated Perception of Human Affect from Longitudinal Behavioural Data. Other research highlights include the Runner-up in Collaboration Category for the Cambridge University Vice-Chancellor's Research Impact and Engagement Awards 2023, Best Paper Award in Responsible Affective Computing at IEEE ACII 2023, Outstanding PC Award at ACM/IEEE HRI’23, RSJ/KROS Distinguished Interdisciplinary Research Award Finalist at IEEE RO-MAN’21, Distinguished PC Award at IJCAI’21, Best Paper Award Finalist at IEEE RO-MAN’20, Finalist for the 2018 Frontiers Spotlight Award, Outstanding Paper Award at IEEE FG’11, and Best Demo Award at IEEE ACII’09. Prof Gunes was the General Co-Chair of IEEE ACII’19, and the Program Co-Chair of ACM/IEEE HRI’20 and IEEE FG’17. She was the Chair of the Steering Board of IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing and was a member of the Human-Robot Interaction Steering Committee. Her research has been supported by various competitive grants, with funding from Google, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council UK (EPSRC), Innovate UK, British Council, Alan Turing Institute and EU Horizon 2020.
