“It hums with quiet honesty, unflashy reveals, tender regrets and risk-taking” Lyn Gardner, The Guardian Quarantine are delighted to announce a screening of their 2011 performance Entitled - including live discussion between members of the creative team and performers. In some sense, Entitled is a performance that never happens. It’s like watching the technical rehearsal for a show that doesn’t exist. It takes the form of a get-in and a get-out - the usually hidden choreography of transforming a theatre from an empty space into a stage for a show and back again.Entitled pulls focus onto what’s often hidden or takes place backstage. The technicians - Greg Akehurst, Lisa Mattocks and Chris Whitwood - come to the fore, exposing and explaining their work as they do it in forensic and quotidian detail. The other performers - dancers Fiona Wright and Jo Fong, musician John Kilroy, writer Sonia Hughes - rehearse their never-to-be-realised roles and, as they do so, expose some of their own histories and relationships with performing. This is one of several projects we’ve worked on with our philosopher-in-residence, Professor Michael Brady, from the University of Glasgow. Michael will join us for the screening.Director Richard Gregory says: &#x27;I have a fascination with watching people work. The privilege of witnessing the attempt at a task and somehow sharing in its completion. In theatre, my voyeurism lets me see ‘get-ins’ and technical rehearsals: the construction of the set, focusing lights, the soundcheck, a particular quality of rehearsal that allows performers a loose exploration. And then the ‘get-out’. I have a distinct memory of sitting in the back row of Theater Kikker in Utrecht, at Festival a/d Werf, watching the get-out for our show Susan &amp; Darren - a couple of months before we made Entitled. The brutal efficiency of the technicians and stage crew applying their skill and expertise - and desire to finish before the bar closed - became an automatic choreography. A space fills and, inevitably, some time later, empties...When we cleared my mum’s house, ready to be sold, months after she died in 2009, I carefully undid the screws, one-by-one, on the wardrobe in her bedroom until my brother stepped in to rip it apart. Why was I being so careful? We tore it down together, drove it to the local tip and flung it into the skip marked “furniture”. Then we went back to the house to lock the door and hand over the keys.’&quot;There&#x27;s something special going on here as Quarantine tries to reach into areas of the theatrical experience other companies ignore...&quot; Donald Hutera, The Times&quot;What Richard Gregory and his company do is show that mankind is constantly reaching for something beyond its power&quot; NRC Handelsblad, Netherlands Daily Hosted on Zoom, this screening of Entitled will involve live pre- and post-show discussions between director Richard Gregory, designer Simon Banham, choreographer Jane Mason, performers/technicians Greg Akehurst, Lisa Mattocks and Chris Whitwood, and philosopher Michael Brady. The screening will take place on Zoom on Friday 29th May at 2pm. Including discussions, the event will finish by 4.30pm. Tickets are free but places are limited and booking essential. The video of Entitled will be captioned. We’re working to improve the accessibility of our screenings.
