The hackathon is back for 2019! Get your annual dose of non-stop tinkering, ideas, and cheers at the DJ Hub from Friday 8th - Sunday 10th November 2019 and be in with a chance to WIN the grand prize of £2,000, thanks to our wonderful sponsors KPMG.
This year we’re inviting you to dredge the brainbank for environmental innovations and designs.
Engineer a food waste calculator bin or use air quality data to re-plan a carpark; build a beach-cleaning robot and test out your microplastic sieving-Thing; model a hydropower generator for high-rise buildings; design circular economy app; evaluate satellite plant-growth images and water quality measurements to make savings on field treatments; recalculate Jersey’s optimal bus routes; or teach an algorithm to identify healthy seafood from sick fishies.
This event is open to everyone, whether or not you consider yourself a “techie”, all that’s needed is an open mind and enthusiasm for finding new or better solutions to problems related to the environment.
Our aim is to inspire and encourage experimentation with technology and – most importantly – for everyone present to learn and have fun.
 We will provide:
-        Near real-time air quality information from a range of sites around Jersey 
-        Water quality measurements for Jersey since 19XX
-        Photos of healthy and diseased XXXX (trees? hemp plants? Seafood? Potato plants?) 
-        Liberty Bus boarding data
-        Traffic counters from 9 arterial routes around St Helier
-        Industry engagement from XX companies
 If you are not participating this year, there are further opportunities to:
-        Contribute data (crop record data, water monitoring, weather station, image databases etc.)
-        Sponsor (cash or in-kind for prizes, give-aways, and catering)
-        Design our verifiably awesome stickers, and T’s
-        Cook for us! Or provide drinks and snacks to sustain the teams as they race to final…

What’s the plan?
Friday 8th November
6pm – doors open & drinks (more local real ale and bubbles this year)
6.30pm – welcome intro, short word from data holders and Health & Safety Champion
7pm - START
Saturday 9th November
Making all day + Cake + Funky Hats
11am – show and tell, how are things going so far? Are you stuck on something, need help? Changed tack, is anyone else doing this? Having fun, want to share? 
Failing fast gets rewarded! Prize for the best mid-hack Post Mortem!
Sunday 10th November
12pm – STOP! Tools down at midday. 5-minute lightning pitches begin, judging and awards - first prize £2,000 (may be something of equivalent value or a mixture)
About 2pm – doors close
How much does it cost?
£10 to register - you'll get it back (and more) in goodies and food at the event.
Who can participate?
Over 18s – ok
Over 16s – need a letter of consent from parent or guardian – contact us to obtain a copy
Under 16s – must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times on a 1-to-1 ratio.
Maximum team size is 6.
Who owns the output?
You do! Anything created during the hackathon is owned by the producing individual or team.
I can’t do 44 hours!
No problem – we understand that you may have other commitments during the event, and you may come and go as you please. We ask all participants to spend a minimum of 12 hours with us as you will get more out of the event by being there as much as you can.
I haven't got a team!
That’s ok. Friday evening to make sure all teams have a bit of everything, and that everyone has a team. It doesn't matter whether your specialism is in development, business, general technology, design, product, data... anyone with enthusiasm to create something and have a go is welcome. 
Travel
We have a limited pot to offset travel costs for students and academics traveling from outside Jersey, please contact us to enquire.
What to bring
- your laptop
- any hardware or prototyping kit you may have and want to use
- your favourite snacks and non-alcoholic drinks (coffee, tea, water, coke, lemonade, and squash will be provided)
- your sense of humour
Please do not bring:
- anything illegal (including controlled substances, weapons or offensive materials - be considerate!) 
- alcohol
