The role of the Environmental Clerk of Works (EnvCoW) is critical to drive environmental compliance and best practice across construction and infrastructure projects. However, as clarity of construction phase environmental roles and responsibilities evolve, the expectations placed on EnvCoWs are becoming more defined. Given the significant infrastructure spend required to meet the transition to a green economy, as well as aspirational residential targets and significant spend on wider infrastructure, demand for construction phase environmental support and EnvCoW in particular is likely to out strip current supply. To meet these challenges, the sector must adapt, with training and development pathways that equip professionals with the right skills.
This industry roundtable, led by University of the West of Scotland (UWS) Centre for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and Naturally Compliant Ltd, provides a forum to explore the EnvCoW role and how to create sufficient capacity to serve demand. The discussions will directly inform the review and potential refresh of our IEMA-accredited CPD course, ensuring it remains fit for purpose at the foundation level. More importantly, this event seeks to collaborate with industry to identify and address skills gaps, helping to create a sustainable talent pipeline for the profession.
