WISE @ UoB is the Women in Science and Engineering society at the University of Birmingham. This society is open to anyone, and runs free events throughout the year. A week of online panel discussions which focus on common barriers in STEM and how, by working together, we can overcome them.

Equal in STEM 2021 - Conversations on dismantling prevalent barriers facing STEM students and graduates.WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) is an independent University of Birmingham Society for anyone in the scientific community interested in diversifying STEM and improving opportunities for women and girls in science. oSTEM is an international organisation for LGBTQ+ people working in, or interested in, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths).BEaMS (Black Ethnic and Minority Scientists) is a University of Birmingham student society, aiming to support and represent students of colour in STEM subjects and to promote equality and diversity.The 93% Club is a national social mobility network dedicated to levelling the playing field for students who were educated at state schools.

WISE, oSTEM, BEaMS and 93% Club are collaborating once again to host the second "Equal in STEM" conference! This event aims to bring students, researchers, and professionals in STEM, from all backgrounds and disciplines, together to discuss common barriers and how together we can work to overcome them. The event will include four panels discussing important issues in STEM. Panel discussions currently include "Experiences in Industry and Progression in STEM", "The Importance of Outreach and Science Communication", "Mental Health in STEM and the Impact of a Pandemic", and finally "Striking a Work-life Balance".   This is designed for everyone, regardless of if you have a STEM background or how you identify. Anyone who wishes to learn more about the STEM community, increase their awareness of issues facing many STEM students and graduates, or to learn more about becoming good allies, are encouraged to attend.   This year, the conference will be held virtually, making it a fantastic opportunity to attend wherever you are in the world! It is hoped that the conference will remain to be a fantastic networking opportunity, via LinkedIn, and will allow all attendees to connect with other scientists or STEM professionals who may be facing similar obstacles, as well as learn how to support each other.    Registering to attend does not commit you to the whole event, but we encourage all attendees to come to every panel to get the most out of the discussions available.

The event will take place across the week commencing 03/05.
