Being seen, heard and valued, a positive message created by people with a learning disability to build a movement of change.A Learning Event for all health and social care staff and people with a learning disability and their friends. At this event we will come together to celebrate and learn about learning disability. This in-person event will feature interactive workshops, presentations and discussions about current thinking and best practice, and a chance to connect with others in the community. Whether you want to increase your understanding or share your experiences, this event is for you. Heidi has campaigned with ‘Don’t Screen Us Out’ since 2016 about non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT). Currently abortions are allowed up to birth for severe disabilities in the UK. In 2021, she took the Government to court to get this “downright discrimination” removed from the law. After losing the case at the High Court and the Court of Appeal. She then asked the Supreme Court and the European Court and they both denied permission to appeal. Thankfully inspired by Heidi, Sir Liam Fox MP is trying to change the law through an amendment to a bill in Parliament.Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

The Our Stories project, led by the Universities of Southampton and Sussex, worked with children and young people with autism and learning disabilities, and their families to co-create short video stories to support them in transitions. These stories show other people who the child is and what they are like. The stories are being used to support education, health and care plans, and particularly, the transitions in life that can prove difficult for this group. The stories provide short, accessible and engaging strengths-based portraits of those who may not communicate in conventional ways.  Here Nicola and Jacqui explain how the Our Stories concept and methodological approach creates opportunities for children and young people who may have a learning disability to represent their own lives through digital stories.

“You can’t explain him in words”: Using co-created video to support transition

Time to be confirmed.  This is an interactive, co-produced and co-delivered presentation with people with lived experience of learning disability. We will be talking about the LeDeR programme, which is Learning from lives and deaths – People with a learning disability and autistic people.  The LeDeR programme's aim is to prevent early or preventable death of people with learning disability and autistic people. King’s College London, University of Central Lancashire and Kingston University London analyse the deaths that are reported and produce a report annually. Staying Alive and Well have representation from The Foundation for People with Learning Disabilities, Pathways Associates and the Estia Centre. 

•	We will tell you how you can report a death of a person with learning disability or autistic person to the programme. We will tell you about
•	The Staying Alive and Well Group and what they do.
•	The latest LeDeR report using the easy read version.
•	How the group work together.

Time to be confirmed.  Zoe’s role is to make sure that patients and carers using services in the behavioural and developmental directorate are involved in improving and developing the services.  Zoe will talk about why it is important to involve service users and carers in developing services.  She will discuss plans to set up an advisory group for people who use mental health & learning disability services and ask participants for their thoughts and ideas about how we can make sure we are giving everyone an opportunity to have their voice heard.

PETAL which stands for PErsonalised Treatment packages for Adults with Learning disabilities who display aggression in community settings, is a national research programme funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) which began in April 2020. The PETAL programme aims to develop and test a new intervention for aggressive challenging behaviour. Our presentation will involve insights into the research programme so far, including what was done in the first three sections of work to get us to this stage. We will give some details about the PETAL therapy and how it was developed and present feedback from service users, clinicians and PETAL therapists that have taken part. Finally, we will give updates on the current phase of the research programme: the main trial where we are testing the effectiveness of PETAL. We will give updates into the number of NHS services we are working with and numbers of participants that have been recruited into the trial

Free Our People Now campaign is led by people with learning difficulties and autistic people supported by Inclusion London and is about the ending and stopping the locking of disabled people in mental health /psychiatric hospitals.  Our presentation will focus on the ‘Bring People Home from Hospital’ network priorities, which are 
•	General Election including mobilizing psychiatric detained inpatients vote and a manifesto.
•	Engage in the Draft Mental Health Bill. 
•	Supporting inpatients who want to move from hospital to community care.
•	Developing resources that will help groups to get involved in the campaign.

Free Our People Now – Stop Locking Us Up In Hospital

Join our live Beyond Words Book Club, exploring what visual literacy is and how pictures can provoke sharing, stories and feelings. While our speakers go through a word-free picture book, our audience will be encouraged to watch and share their own insights, emotions and stories. Learn about how Book Clubs can empower people to make friends, have fun and build understanding.

 Time to be confirmed. Believe you can and you are halfway there “ – Removing barriers to employment for individuals with Learning disabilities and Autism. Aurora Nexus will discuss the benefits and positive impact of employment for individuals with a learning disability and autistic people. We will look at the barriers to gaining employment, and how , as a sector,  we can all help remove these barriers. We will provide useful information, advice and guidance on how we can all support people with Autism and Learning disabilities into work, paid or voluntary, and  Using case studies from people with a learning disability and autistic people , employed by Aurora Nexus, you will hear first-hand the positive impact this has made on their lives. 

"Believe you can and you are halfway there“ – Removing barriers to employment

Time to be confirmed. Stopping the over-medication of people with Learning Disabilities and/or Autism (STOMP) has been a major focus in South East London. Some service users are prescribed mental health medications without having a mental health diagnosis. Additionally, many individuals with a learning disability are not even correctly coded or recorded in primary care, causing them to miss out on essential support. This presentation helps health and social care professionals to understand the some of the data we have gathered and highlight the importance of collaboration between organisations and multi-disciplinary teams (MDTs) to address this service gap, to better support those who are on unnecessary medications

Stopping over medication of people with a learning disability, autism or both

A small number of people with a learning disability get into trouble with the law. This can be a very difficult time for people and for their families and carers. Over recent years, a number of services and resources have become available to support people with a learning disability who are at risk of offending or find themselves in contact with the Criminal Justice System. Rory and Jasmine work in an NHS service in south London called the Forensic Intellectual and Neurodevelopmental Disabilities team, or the ‘FIND team’ for short. In this presentation, they will describe and explain the progress that has been made in this area and how the FIND team works with people with a learning disability, their network, and other agencies, to enable them to live safely in the community.

Supporting people with a learning disability who get into trouble with the law
