Ethnography-informed case study: Practical considerations and tips

Best known as an in-depth method for studying people and their cultures, and for the production of rich data and ‘thick description’, ethnography is a holistic study of a particular context whereby researchers are immersed in a culture in order to observe human interactions and behaviours from the perspective of insiders. However, given the practical limitations of fieldwork – which can include time and financial concerns – it is rare that doctoral researchers are able to produce a traditional ethnography. One of the ways we might overcome these limitations is to modify the research design, using techniques drawn from ethnographic approaches and mobilising them in a different way; this talk presents how to conduct an ethnography-informed case study, combing the strengths of an ethnographic approach with the feasibility of a case study protocol. Drawing on my doctoral research project on international students’ participation in intercultural classrooms at the UK, this presentation aims to provide some practical considerations and tips for applying this research design to doctoral study. Beginning with a critical discussion of the prevailing terms used in contemporary literature, such as ‘ethnographic case study’, ‘mini-ethnographic case study’, and ‘micro-ethnography’, I will then discuss ways in which these principles can be applied to case study work, with reference to the selection of cases, and ‘nested’ approaches to understanding cases in context. The talk will conclude with practical tips for data collection and analysis as well as some potential questions you may come across during academic conferences, or even your viva.
