This free event is designed for project managers, producers, and leaders in the cultural sector who want to refine their evaluation approach

<ul><li>Do you want to refine your evaluation approach by exploring who evaluation is really for, why we evaluate and how we can ensure we learn from it?  </li><li>Are you interested in  getting beyond monitoring for funders, to focus on understanding  more about your work, and what works or doesn’t?  </li></ul> These free workshops are aimed at project managers, producers and leaders working in the cultural sector, who have experience of using evaluation in their work. They are part of the CAKE (Creative and Artistic Knowledge Exchange) series, organised by the Cultural Institute. This creates bridges between cultural organisations and researchers at the University of Leeds. The two sessions making up the event will: <ul><li>enable you to think critically about why and how you evaluate project work or the work of your organisation, as well as who evaluation is for. </li></ul><ul><li>offer flexible, challenging and learning-based approaches to shape and enhance your evaluation work in practice.  </li></ul><ul><li>provide different approaches that you can choose to employ in different pieces of work. </li></ul><ul><li>include a 1:1 follow up in summer 2025 to assess how you have been able to use the session and answer any follow on-questions. This information will help you implement learning and help the researchers involved assess the impact from their work.  </li></ul>The event will be grounded in research developed at the University of Leeds.  Workshop 1: The <a href="https://www.culturalvalue.org.uk/our-work/evaluation/evaluation-principles/" title="https://www.culturalvalue.org.uk/our-work/evaluation/evaluation-principles/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Centre for Cultural Value’s Evaluation</a> Principles in Practice, Dr Emma McDowell These collaboratively produced Evaluation Principles provide a framework to shape how evaluation is carried out and implemented in the cultural sector. They were developed with a working group of over 40 representatives from a range of roles within the sector, all with different perspectives and experiences of evaluation. Rather than acting as a definitive step-by-step guide to doing evaluation, the principles were instead designed to help   ground and guide your evaluation practice. They do this by supporting you and your stakeholders to set priorities, engage the right people, and use appropriate and ethical methods to understand the holistic impact of your work.  Workshop 2: FailSpace, Professor Leila Jancovich <a href="https://failspaceproject.co.uk/" title="https://failspaceproject.co.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">FailSpace |</a>is an AHRC-funded research project, undertaken in collaboration with Queen Margaret University Edinburgh, exploring how the cultural sector can be supported to better recognise, acknowledge and learn from failure. The research is based on the principle that learning from failure should be an integral part of the process of making work, but their research suggests that this is rarely part of valuation processes, which tend to focus on measuring positive impacts and creating narratives of success, with limited critical reflection of what could be done better nextThis evaluation day is free to attend but spaces are very limited so please sign up here to confirm your attendance. Attendance is limited to two people maximum per organisation.  Please let us know as soon as you can if something comes up and you are unable to attend so we can offer your place to someone on the waiting list.    Facilitator Biographies: Professor Leila Jancovich is Principle Investigator for Failspace. She worked for many years in the cultural sector as a producer, researcher and policy maker before entering academia. During this time she was involved in many evaluations that sought to “make the case” for culture to their funders but became frustrated by their lack of criticality. Failspace aims to address this by asking the cultural sector to consider the successes and failures that inevitably co-exist in all work. Her wider research explores questions about not only who gets to participate in the arts, but who gets to participate in decisions about what we value as art and how we evaluate these different perspectives.   Dr Emma McDowell Before joining the School of Performance and Cultural Industries full-time as a Lecturer in Cultural &amp; Creative Industries in 2024, they worked for over 15 years in a variety of producing, marketing and research/evaluation roles in the arts and cultural sector. Most recently Emma was a Senior Consultant at The Audience Agency and formed part of the Postdoctoral Research team at the <a href="https://www.culturalvalue.org.uk/" title="https://www.culturalvalue.org.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Centre for Cultural Valu</a>e. In the latter role, they developed a number of resources on evaluation and cultural engagement for practitioners, policy-makers and the wider research community.
