He has everything. Friends, money, and a fortieth birthday party to remember. Then Death walks in.
Five hundred years on, the great morality play crashes into the present tense. Carol Ann Duffy's blistering new version drags Everyman out of the medieval mist and drops him — champagne in hand, cocaine on the table — into a world that looks unsettlingly like our own. A world of loyalty cards and loyalty tests. Of conspicuous consumption and quiet reckoning. Of a planet we are using up faster than we are using ourselves.
When Death comes calling early, who will stand beside you? And what, in the end, was any of it for?
