You’re very welcome to an entertaining, surprising and moving evening with the award-winning writer, broadcaster and storyteller Cole Moreton and friends, celebrating the beauty in everyday life and exploring our human need to connect with each other, with ourselves, with nature and with the divine, if we believe in that. Cole is a member of Emmanuel and is delighted to celebrate the launch of his new book Everything Is Extraordinary in the company of good friends including Garth Hewitt, Claire Tabraham, David Perry and Bruce Pont, who will each contribute songs and stories of their own. Tickets are free but donations are encouraged and the proceeds will go towards furniture for the ground floor cafe space, a place where we hope people will meet, tell stories and share life together. Who is Cole and what will happen on the night?Cole won gold at the Arias, the radio academy Oscars, for his work as a writer and presenter on BBC Radio 4 and is a regular contributor to Zoe Ball’s Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2, telling stories and pausing for thought with a live audience of more than seven million people a time. He was named Interviewer of the Year for his articles in the Mail on Sunday and has also written for the Guardian, the Independent, the Telegraph and the Financial Times, among others. Cole’s new book Everything Is Extraordinary is a collection of eighteen encounters with remarkable people, some of them incredibly famous like Scarlett Johansson, Tiger Woods, Nelson Mandela and the Queen. Others are not famous at all but they have inspiring and thought provoking stories, like Zahra the refugee who crossed the Channel on an overladen rubber boat at dawn one Christmas morning at the end of an epic journey that sounds like an ancient folk tale. The evening will start with Cole asking you to think about the most remarkable person you’ve ever met. They don’t have to be famous, it could be your Mum, the milkman, a loyal friend, a stranger who helped you out or passed on wisdom or anyone, really. He’ll introduce the theme and offer a choice of stories, depending on what people want to hear on the night. They’ll be warm, funny, engaging, moving and get you thinking about what it means to be a human and how we are better when we work together. Then after a break Cole will encourage people to share their own stories and reflect together on what we can learn from them. Cole plays in a band called The Light Keepers with Claire, Dave and Bruce and we are delighted to say they will be sharing songs of their own this evening, along with special guest Garth Hewitt. The title of the evening comes from something that was said by the artist Claerwen James about the way her father, the great Australian writer Clive James, saw the world in his final days. Housebound and coming to the end of life because of cancer, he began to see the beauty in even the smallest things like an apple or a mote of dust in sunlight, and because there was so little time left he realised that every moment was potentially precious. As Claerwen says: ‘Everything was extraordinary.’
