A comparative look at the construction techniques used during the construction of the three Forth Bridges.
The Forth Bridge was an engineering triumph which to this day remains one of the most visually impressive structures man has ever created. It was ahead of its time and a legacy to the industrial age.
Although a less pioneering design and construction, the Forth Road Bridge is a member of a group of bridges constructed using cable spinning. While a highly dynamic solution it is hugely affected by environmental conditions.
The recently constructed Queensferry Crossing was a testament to balanced cantilever construction. The cable stay bridge balanced cantilever method has been used worldwide, but Queensferry Crossing implemented aspects never before tried. A strong focus will be on future proofing the bridge to extend its design life.
Going forward, what could be next? A brief look at developments on the E39 route in Norway and whether this marriage of oil, gas and bridge technology could feasibly be used to develop a bridge joining Scotland to Northern Ireland.
