Exploring Executive Function; what it is, the stages of development & how it can prepare children for writing.

The day will be broken down into two sessions; <ul><li>Why Don't They All Learn Well Through Play? 9:30am - 12:30pm</li><li>FREE Lunch Provided 12:30pm - 1:30pm </li><li>Getting Ready for Writing Through Play 1:30pm - 4:30pm </li></ul>Ideal for early years professionals, (preschools, nurseries, childminders, school reception class teams) and SENCos, both Early Years and Primary aged. Overview of SessionsWhy Don't They All Learn Well Through Play? This session will look at Executive function in the early years; what it is, what are the stages of development from 0-5, and exploring practical ideas for what play experiences professionals can provide to help children strengthen their skills.Learn how to play with children to build their attention and emotional skills, to be able to join in with adult-led and structured-group activities, to develop friendships and relationships with peers... the secret is in the frontal lobe developement.Executive Function in the Early Years is something every early years professional should know about, and is being recognised more and more as a predictor of success in education.Getting Ready for Writing Through PlayThe foundations of success for writing rest in play and movement, not in holding a pencil: understand the physical development needed to develop in the early years to be ready for successful writing, and lots of practical ideas for play experiences that help children acquire this. Learn how to help children be ready to write - without ever picking up a pencil! Gain an understanding behind what motor, visual and play development gets childrenready to go into school, ready to succeed!Also ideal for Reception and Year One teachers, looking to get children to improve their early pencil skills and recognise developmental markers of success.

Learning Objectives<ul><li>To understand the importance of physical development in the early years for school readiness and formal learning</li><li>To understand the active role of play as the primary means of achieving this readiness in brain and body for young children - play is hardcore learning!</li><li>To support confidence in knowing the developmental chain of both skill sets, so professionals can observe the stage their child is currently at and identify their next steps</li><li>To support practitioners' ideas and confidence in providing fun, active play experiences that build successful learning and development.</li></ul>

About the TutorEllie Collar has worked as both a Special School teacher and an Early Years SEN advisor for a Local Authority, and now works as an independent consultant, advisor, teacher and trainer with an active case load in schools, early years settings and families. Her particular interest is in the role of strong early development as the most important foundation for successful and confident formal learning. She also works regularly with an inclusive children's sensory theatre company.
