Exploring innovative digital music, art and research which investigates the impact of networking technology on musical creation and performance practice,Network Music Festivalpresents cutting edge musical performances, workshops and discussions.The Network Music Festival took place 2012-2014 at the heart of Birmingham’s (UK) creative community. Responding to the move to online music making during the 2020 global pandemic and with increasing concern in artistic communities about the climate emergency, the festival is returning for aglobalfourth edition, which will take place entirely online15-18th July 2020.

An exhibition walkthrough with the artists featured in our online exhibition, hosted by media-artist Joana Chicau. The exhibition includes video works and interactive apps that contemplate how we make music and interact via web-technologies. As we look to support artists and audiences alike through the festival programme all our concerts will be free to view, but we are accepting donations on a Pay What You Can principle. All donations will go directly to artists. Distant Touch explores a way to make this connection more visceral and immediate. The web page allows users, from anywhere in the world, to communicate with each other in real time through visuals, touch and sound. Hopefully this helps them feel less lonely during this age of social distancing.ChronophonicsChronophonics is an internet installation and collaborative music experience. Inspired by collaborative internet art like Reddit Place and Photoshop Tennis, Chronophonics is a public musical canvas, editable by anyone who visits the web page. Visitors can experiment with the music in their own browser, and change it as much as they wish in a personal canvas. When they are ready, they can submit some of their changes to the public canvas, for everyone to hear. Immaterial.cloudimmaterial.cloud is an immersive audiovisual installation that explores a possible networked future of peer-to-peer technologies, away from the cloud. immaterial.cloud creates the opportunity for a shared space with participants by using technology in a collective way. It requires the phones to act together, and out of their hands, not as individuals as is usual in this era of personalized devices. Experiencing immaterial.cloud presents an opportunity for a restoration of attention that might have been lost by an overuse of technology in the typical way.WeblogmusicWeblogmusic is an asynchronous platform for free improvisation, time-shifted like a DVR, or like karaoke for free jazz. Using the structure of today’s screen-mediated communications, these performers contribute their parts one at a time, responding to what was played before, and together they build “born digital” performances that expose the delays and glitches of network communications and make something genuinely human with it. As the audience, we witness performances that only exist in our web browsers, in the moments we’re viewing it. There can be no definitive version of the performance.For Our Courageous WorkersOn April 29, 2020, Tenth Intervention hosted a massive, city-wide music performance of “For Our Courageous Workers” at the 7pm ‘cheer honoring our front-line workers.’ The work was meant for musicians of every level and all the people of New York City to perform the symphonic fanfare “For Our Courageous Workers” across the city. Everyone was welcome to participate. Following the performance, Tenth Intervention has been compiling over 80 videos of participants from across the tri-state area into an 11 minute film, comprised of musicians of all ages and levels. It Is One Hundred Seconds to MidnightIn honor of the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, composer Dorian Wallace wrote "It Is One-Hundred Seconds to Midnight" to raise awareness, inspire action, and raise mutual aid. Collaborating with 16 pianists and 32 dancers from around the globe, the video premiered on Facebook and YouTube on Earth Day, April 22, 8pm ET. In January 2020, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists set the Doomsday Clock to 100 seconds to midnight due to looming existential threats of nuclear war, climate change, disruptive technologies and most recently the COVID-19 pandemic. This is the closest to midnight the Clock has ever been set.ARpeggiatorThe ARpeggiator is a collaborative AR music-making application that works in Chrome on Android devices allowing multiple users to make music together in real-time by creating spherical notes in AR space.
