Join composer &amp; sonic artist Luci Holland at the Tinderbox Lab for a look at audiovisual creativity using visual programming tools!Some examples of the tools we'll be looking at are <a href="https://cycling74.com/products/max" title="https://cycling74.com/products/max" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Max MSP</a> (for reactive/interactive audio) and <a href="https://derivative.ca/" title="https://derivative.ca/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">TouchDesigner</a> (for generative visuals).This session will be aimed at beginners and is meant as an introduction and overview to looking at these tools, and will be casual, experimental, easy-going and fun!Together we will look at the basics of the softwares, some example projects that Luci has worked on previously, and experiment with some of the possibilities.Spaces are limited so please book to secure your place, with supported free spaces available for members of underrepresented groups - just contact us at lab@tinderboxcollective.org to request a free space.For ages 18+

<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_programming_language" title="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_programming_language" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Visual programming languages</a> are found in applications and digital tools, that provide intuitive methods for creating interactive audio and/or visuals, without the need for writing code directly.Instead of generating audio or visuals by strictly using code or a scripting language, these softwares are usually node-based and provide graphical representation of how different components function and interact.These tools provide users different, accessible means to experiment digitally, to create unique and interactive art that can be intervened with through data streams and hardware inputs like webcams, microphones, headsets and more.

What will I need?You will need:A laptop (preferably with webcam/mic input, but not essential)Headphones<a href="https://cycling74.com/downloads" title="https://cycling74.com/downloads" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Max MSP</a> downloaded, installed and app opened once - Max offers a free trial for 30 days, with a $9.99 monthly subscription after (which can be cancelled anytime). Alternatively Max can be used without a subscription, but projects can't be saved<a href="https://derivative.ca/download" title="https://derivative.ca/download" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">TouchDesigner</a> downloaded, installed and app opened once - TouchDesigner offers free non-commercial licenses for personal use, which is only slightly limited functionallyIf any of these requirements are a challenge for you please get in touch to let us know.

About Luci Holland and the event:<a href="https://luciholland.com/" title="https://luciholland.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Luci Holland</a> is an award-winning Scottish composer and sound artist who composes and produces music and audiovisual art for film, games and concert. She composed the original dynamic/responsive game music for Blazing Griffin‘s 2018 release Murderous Pursuits, and live action fantasy film Sayo in 2020, with the soundtrack winning a New Music Scotland EVM Award for New Music in Media in 2021. More recently she has provided music &amp; sound support for CRT7 by Scottish BAFTA-winning developer Amicable Animal; original game music for Playhead by Lowtek Games; and concept music for Personasmith by Thunkd (all currently in development), and is also currently working on several other unannounced games projects.She also builds and designs interactive sonic/art installations &amp; creative technology-inspired live performances, most recently working on Dream Visualiser (with Alt-W 2023), Trees of Life (in collaboration with We Throw Switches and Robin Baumgarten in 2023), and Spectral Ballroom (a collaborative audiovisual work with Florence Richardson, Hidden Door 2022). She also works with Tinderbox Collective as a Programme Director for a range of interdisciplinary projects, exploring a crossover of games, art, creative technology and music.This workshop has been supported by the Creative Scotland Open Fund for Individuals, Tinderbox Collective, and The Wee Hub as part of a personal residency project Luci has been a part of from April 2023 - March 2024.
