This webinar is the second of a series that will focus on explaining and predicting changes in the Earth System

The formulation of robust policies for mitigation of, and adaptation to, climate change requires quantitative understanding of how and why specific changes are unfolding in the Earth System, and what might happen in the future. Quantitative explanation of observed changes – through robust process-based detection and attribution – is also fundamental to specification of confidence in climate assessments, predictions and projections. This webinar series will provide a discussion forum on topics focused on predicting and explaining a range of different climate phenomena and events, while supporting the further development of a scientific agenda that will be taken forward by the <a href="https://www.wcrp-climate.org/epesc" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">WCRP Explaining and Predicting Earth System Change Lighthouse Activity</a> and partners co-organising this series.This second webinar will focus on the recent triple La Nina event and will provide a view of causes, key processes and prediction of such event. Invited speakers will give a 20-minute talk each. After all the talks, a round table discussion will follow, with questions from participants. The event will last 90 minutes.SPEAKERS:<ul><li>Mike McPhaden (NOAA, USA): Causes and Consequences of the 2020-2022 La Niña</li><li>Fei Zheng (Institute of Atmospheric Physics, China): Key processes on triggering the multi-year La Niña event as revealed by seasonal climate predictions</li><li>Xian Wu (UCAR, USA): Predicting the duration of La Niña events using the CESM multiyear forecast systems</li></ul>The event will be recorded.

<h2>WCRP Lighthouse Activities</h2>The <a href="https://www.wcrp-climate.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">World Climate Research Programme (WCRP)</a> has developed five new activities that aim to make critical near-term progress towards meeting WCRP’s Vision, Mission, and four Scientific Objectives, as outlined in the <a href="https://www.wcrp-climate.org/images/documents/WCRP_Strategic_Plan_2019/WCRP-Strategic-Plan-2019-2028-FINAL-c.pdf" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">WCRP Strategic Plan 2019–2028</a>. The <a href="https://www.wcrp-climate.org/lha-overview" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">WCRP Lighthouse Activities</a> are designed to be ambitious and transdisciplinary (integrating across WCRP and collaborating with partners) so that they can rapidly advance some of the new science and technologies, and institutional frameworks, that are needed to manage climate risk and meet society’s urgent need for robust and actionable climate information more effectively.To do this, the Lighthouse Activities will need to draw on WCRP’s core scientific and technical capabilities, and strategic partnerships. Their scope encompasses building new knowledge of the Earth’s climate system, its near-term predictability, and longer-term trajectories, through to harnessing emerging technologies to better simulate the Earth system via a digital “twin”, as well as exploring new approaches for managing climate risk that start with decision context and user needs.
