Exploding Appendix is a group of creatives and researchers united in the common task of constructing an artistic vision for the future. Drawing upon the history of avant-garde art and radical counter-culture we seek to unite artistic experimentation and intellectual vision in order to respond to the needs of our time. Central to this project is our fortnightly meetings, free and open to all, where we meet to explore ideas and share in the process of creation.

Carla Lonzi, Art Criticism, and the Feminism of Revolta Femminile (In-venue and Online - 5th April 2022)

Art Critic, Poet and Feminist activist, Carla Lonzi was born in 1931 and worked in art criticism from the late 1950s. Throughout the 1960s Carla Lonzi wrote as an art critic for avant-garde magazines and published Autoritratto, a book based on audio recordings with different contemporary artists. In 1970, however, she abandoned her role as an art critic and founded the feminist collective Revolta Femminile. Rather than develop a feminist art criticism or encourage more women to participate in the arts, Carla Lonzi “rejected the prevailing concept of creativity, in particular the notion that art itself could be an emancipatory practice for women in a field of creativity colonized by ‘the myth of male culture.” p.1 This break with art institutions has produced what Ventrella and Zapperi call “a problematic divide […] in biographical narratives, which seem to pivot around a time before feminism, when she was an art critic, and a time within feminism, when art seems to have no space.” p.1

In their recent anthology, Feminism and Art in Postwar Italy: The Legacy of Carla Lonzi Francesco Ventrella and Giovanna Zapperi bring together a collection of essays that attempt to think these two phases of Lonzi’s life together. In this session we will be joined by Francesco Ventrella to discuss avant-garde in postwar Italy, Carla Lonzi’s art criticism and the feminism of Revolta Femminile. Ventrella is a senior lecturer in art history at the University of Sussex. 

 This session will be run as part of the Exploding Appendix Avant-garde Art Practice and Research Group’s meetup every three weeks. The sessions are free and open to everyone. No prior knowledge of the subject matter is needed, but if people are interested, further reading can be found here:
