Exploring Images and Light

Nottingham Contemporary

Join us for these hands-on workshops where you can develop your creative skills and build up confidence in discussing contemporary art.
Each week we explore different ways of making images, through experimenting with collage, light, photography and text. We will look at how our exhibiting artist, Lis Rhodes, makes her films, and how ideas, emotions and experiences might be expressed through visual art.
By participating in these sessions, you will learn about the many different ways artists such as Lis Rhodes experiment with media. You will create your own images filled with meaning, and have opportunities to share your creative work with others.
No experience or previous skills are needed. You can interpret activities in a way that suits you and your learning needs/style though be mindful there will be a range of experiences, knowledge and ability so let us know if you’d like to challenge yourself more or need more time to explore. You’re welcome to take your creative work home however there is a group exhibition on the final week which you may want to include your art in.
Come along to take part and create art through conversation, creative play and reflection.
 
Just £15 per session or £45 for the full course of four sessions.
Refreshments and all art materials provided.
 
Exploring Light and Image is open to all aged 16+ but specifically tailored for people aged 65 and over. We offer a limited number of reduced rates for new participants over 65 years old. Session Information
Tue 2 Jul, 10am-1pm
Session 1: Abstract images
Create and project abstract images on transparent acetate, which will be projected using a slide projector and an overhead projector. Make a personal sketchbook to document your ‘explorations’ throughout each session.
 
Tue 9 Jul, 10am-1pm
Session 2: Abstract photography and collaging
Capture geometric shapes around Nottingham Contemporary building (inside and outside) using black and white photography. Experiment with layering collage and words onto photographs.
 
Tue 16 Jul, 10am-1pm
Session 3: Cyanotype 
Experiment with the photographic process of cyanotype, using a UV light box and pre coated light sensitive paper.
 
Tue 23 Jul, 10am-1pm
Session 4: Creative writing and showcase
Use text as creative writing within visual artworks. Curate, display and share your works in an exhibition, that reflect upon all the sessions.
