We are a collective of artists, curators, gallerists and writers who are exploring various means to show solidarity and support for people who have been affected by natural and manmade disasters. The 2011 Japanese earthquake, tsunami and subsequent Fukushima nuclear fallout has been the catalyst for Art Action UK.

<H3 CLASS="Body">Following the nuclear disaster in Fukushima, how are artists responding to altered social and physical realities? </H3>
 
It has been 8 years since the triple disaster hit Japan, on 11th March 2011. Reflecting on the global impact of this disaster, AAUK is holding a discussion event at Deptford X Project Space.
 
AAUK has invited a panel of speakers, including Yoi Kawakubo, Gabriella Hirst and Warren Harper, to discuss the diverse ways in which artists are confronting global socio-political issues relating to the disaster in Fukushima. Spotlighting connections beyond Japan and UK, the event addresses how artists contribute to discourses around the nuclear. In a cultural environment that obscures the long-term implications of the nuclear Anthropocene, how do artists visualise the unseeable? What is the role of art when confronting such a huge scale disaster? 
 
Speakers: 
Yoi Kawakubo is a Spanish born Japanese artist based in London and Tokyo. His provocative approach to visualise radiation within Fukushima exclusion zone through exposing sealed photographic film has won his position as Art Action UK Residency Award winner in 2015. His practice includes photography, film, and performative, audience participatory activities. 
Gabriella Hirst is an artist Researcher from Sydney Australia, current fellow at the Bomb Factory Studio Foundation in North London. She works with film, installation, performance and bio-art to untangle romantic associations between art history and landscape. Her current performative research project, ‘How to Make a Bomb” circulates around a specific breed of rose cultivated and registered with common name Rosa “Atom Bomb” in 1953. Hirst is researching possible links and associations between botanical and nuclear fields.
Warren Harper is a curator, writer and researcher based in London. He is a PhD candidate at Goldsmiths Art Department where his practice-based curatorial research project will investigate the relationship between the nuclear landscape of the Blackwater Estuary, home to the Bradwell Nuclear Power Station, and its communities and technologies. In 2017 he participated in a residency programme with Arts Catalyst and S-AIR in Hokkaido, Japan, to research nuclear power and alternative energies. There he initiated, alongside James Ravinet, research-led project Institute for the Recognition of Peripheral Interests (IROPI).
