Dr Phil Webber is chair of Scientists for Global Responsibility. Originally a research physicist at Imperial College London, he co-authored London after the Bomb: What a nuclear attack really means (OUP, 1982) and Crisis over Cruise (Penguin, 1983), and was one of the expert witnesses on the impacts of nuclear weapons at the conferences that led up to the 2017 UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.Leaving academia, he worked for Kirklees Council for 21 years as head of one of the UK’s leading (and award-winning) environment programmes, focusing on reducing carbon emissions, creating jobs and improving health. He was then for nine years a director of the not-for-profit Yorkshire Energy Services (YES).He has written widely on the unacceptable risks presented by militarism and continues to write about new weapons systems, the pervasive influence of the military and pathways towards a low-carbon society and demilitarised human security.
