Facing Out: Panel Discussion
An exhibition of portraits of people who have experienced facial cancers together with their choice of artworks from the Whitworth collections.The portraits have been created in public by Lucy Burscough during her residency at Maggie’s Cancer Support Centre in the grounds of The Christie Hospital.
The Facing Out panel discussion will explore facial cancer and disfigurement from the point of view of a patient, surgeon, social scientist, cancer support specialist and artist. This panel discussion will take place in gallery 5.

Mr Damir Kosutic
Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at The Christie. His specialisms include complex microvascular reconstruction for breast cancer, lymphoedema, upper/lower limbs, head & neck and breast/chest wall following cancer resections, perforator flaps. Damir is regularly called upon to perform plastic surgery on people who have experienced facial cancers.
Dr Anne-Marie Martindale
Applied health anthropologist, policy analyst, evaluator, lecturer. Anne-Marie’s doctoral research explored the relationship between acquired facial 'disfigurement' and identity shift; and socio-cultural meanings and roles associated with faces.
Mr Graeme Heward
Physiotherapist and author. Graeme has undergone extensive plastic surgery following treatment for a sinonasal adenocarcinoma (a cancerous tumour of the nasal lining). He has written a book about his experience with cancer and his approach to recuperating and raising funds by undertaking a long-distance cycle ride. The book is called “Riding with The Alien” and is available on Amazon. Graeme is currently in training to cycle to every Maggie’s Centre in the country in June 2019.
Sinéad Collins. RGN, MSc (Advanced Practice) NMP, Dip Hyp.
Sinéad’s role is Centre Head at Maggie’s Manchester, located in the grounds of the Christie NHSFT. Sinéad oversees everything that happens in the Centre, from supporting visitors to managing the programme of support and mentoring staff.
Sinéad comes from an oncology nursing background, having spent 13 years at The Christie hospital.
A mature student, Sinead did an ACCESS to education course and first went to The Christie as a third year nursing student, she progressed to Nurse Clinician, specialising in surgical oncology, specifically pelvic cancers - gynaecology/urology/colorectal.
During her career Sinéad set up and developed the pre-operative assessment service at The Christie.
Sinéad worked as a Clinical Academic at The University of Manchester School of Nursing, Midwifery and Social work lecturing on four units across the Bnurs’ programme. An integrative hypnotherapist, she continues to practice and train hypnotherapists.
Lucy Burscough
Award-winning artist and arts for health practitioner. Lucy has recently completed a residency at Maggie’s Manchester undertaking the Arts Council England/National Lottery funded ‘Facing Out’ project which is currently being exhibited at The Whitworth.
