"Failed Experiments" is a performative sound installation of precarious contraptions, made from mundane objects and small motors. These contraptions seem rather autonomous, yet Akama and Jacques are also present in the space, re-arranging, disturbing, interacting with the population of animated objects. This is Akama and Jacques's first collaboration, after more than a year of sharing thoughts, fascination for specific objects - and failed experiments. They will develop their collaboration in residency at Access Space Sheffield in the days running up to the festival.
Ryoko Akama is a sound artist/composer/performer, who approaches listening situations that magnify silence, time and space and offer quiet temporal/spatial experiences. Her sound works employ small and fragile objects such as paper balloons and glass bottles, creating tiny occurrences that embody ‘almost nothing’ aesthetics. She composes text events and performs a diversity of alternative scores in collaboration with international artists. She runs melange edition label, amespace and co-edits mumei publishing.
Anne-F Jacques is a sound artist based in Montreal, Canada. She is interested in amplification, erratic sound reproduction devices and construction of various contraptions and idiosyncratic systems. Her particular focus is on low technology, trivial objects and unpolished sounds. She has ungoing collaborations projects with Tim Olive, Ryoko Akama and Julie Doucet, amongst others. She has presented several sound installations and live performances in North and South America, Europe and Japan. Anne-F is also involved with Crustacés Tapes, a postal sound distribution project.
