This talk is based on Steve Taylor’s seminal book The Fall, which, since its publication 20 years ago, has been translated into many languages, and was described by Eckhart Tolle as “an important and fascinating book about the origin, history and impending demise of the ego”.
Evidence shows that prehistoric humans and many indigenous peoples lived in intimate connection with the natural world. In this talk based on recent research and insights, Steve Taylor describes how ‘The Fall’ – in Abrahamic religions, Adam and Eve’s being cast from the Garden of Eden, a myth which resonates with legends from around the world – was a fall into separation, and hence into psychological suffering and cultural chaos. As a result, the last few thousand years of human history have been a constant saga of brutality and chaos.
Steve will suggest evidence of a ‘trans-fall’ movement beyond separation. The first signs were the development of ancient spiritual traditions that formulated practices and paths towards connection and oneness. More recently – over the last 250 years or so – a number of significant cultural changes suggest a move towards increasing empathy and equality, openness to sex and the body, and – most significantly of all – increasing interest in spirituality. As more and more people engage in spiritual practices and undergo spontaneous spiritual experiences and transformations, we may be heading towards a collective awakening, and the next phase of our evolution as a species.
