Fascinating Ferns

With so many technical issues being faced by society we believe that our communities will make better decisions if they have a deeper understanding of the underlying science and technology. We aim to make people aware of how the STEM subjects (science, technology engineering and maths) play a part in what we take for granted in everyday life.Sidmouth Science Festival started in 2012 with a weekend of science events in Sidmouth and at the nearby Norman Lockyer Observatory as well as a single day in local schools and art in the local gallery.Since then it has grown to a 10 day event with over 120 activities: visitor numbers have increased, visitors have been drawn from a larger area including overseas and more schools have been involved with hundreds of East Devon students taking part. Key speakers over the years have included Professor Iain Stewart, Professor Monica Grady. Professor Edzard Ernst, Professor Bill McGuire and Adam Hart Davis as well as Dr Adam Rutherford.

Fascinating Ferns with Fred Rumsey retired Senior Curator at the Natural History Museum.Meet at Muttersmoor Car Park, Peak Hill Rd, Sidmouth by the information board.Join Fred Rumsey, an expert on ferns, to explore and learn about ferns on a short woodland walk. He will explain the biology and conservation of ferns and identify some of the commoner species. The walk is suitable for beginners or those who wish to improve their knowledge of this fascinating group of plants. Fred is now retired but was previously Senior Curator in charge of the British Fern and Historic Plant Collections at the Natural History Museum, London. He is a past President of the British Pteridological Society and currently their Conservation Officer He is also a General Referee for ferns for the Botanical Society of the British Isles. Stout shoes should be worn as the site is flat but uneven in places, with loose stony flints and exposed tree roots and also likely to be muddy in places. Dogs must be kept on a lead.
