With homes accounting for 20% of the UK’s total greenhouse gas emissions and strong demand for large-scale housing developments showing no signs of abating, the housing sector has a critical role to play in achieving the UK’s net zero target.

This event will see the launch of a new UKGBC report examining the design and cost implications for delivering new homes that are net zero carbon on a large-scale residential scheme. The analysis will shine a light on the changes needed for new homes to meet future updates to building regulations – including Part L and the Future Homes Standard – whilst also understanding the feasibility of achieving embodied carbon targets developed by RIBA and LETI.

The study aims to answer key questions being asked by developers, housebuilders and policymakers as they embark on their journey towards net zero homes, including:

• What design changes are needed for new homes to achieve the Future Homes Standard?
• How much embodied carbon is associated with the infrastructure works for a typical residential scheme?
• What are the effects on cost and viability when delivering net zero carbon homes?

At the event attendees will gain insights on key findings from the report authors, which can then be used as an evidence base when assessing the feasibility of new net zero carbon housing developments.

This study follows on from last year’s successful Building the Case for Net Zero report, which examined the feasibility of high-rise net zero carbon office and apartment buildings.
