CIES Gender and Education Committee

The CIES Gender and Education Standing Committee (GEC) is excited to continue the revised iteration of its mentorship program with a second virtual workshop in February 26th, 2020! This builds on the success of our first virtual workshop in November 2019 and feedback from the 2018-2019 pilot mentorship year and a literature review conducted on feminist mentorship. 
THE WORKSHOP 
The second virtual workshop will take place on February 26th, 2020 from 3:30pm-5:00pm EST. On the subject of Fostering Feminist Mentorship, it will cover how to identify potential mentors and feminist mentors, develop feminist mentorship within existing mentoring and/or developmental relationships, and utilize/ leverage feminist mentoring relationships to excel within your field/organization, while de-constructing gendered and racialized cultures. Expert panelists will include Dr. Supriya Baily, Associate Professor, College of Education and Human Development, George Mason University; Dr. Claudia Mitchell, James McGill Professor, Department of Integrated Studies in Education, McGill University and Shirle Miske, from Miske Witt & Associates International. 
THE WORKSHOP SERIES 
The 2019-2020 GEC mentorship program uses a series of online and in-person workshops and events that draw on feminist and critical race theories of mentoring to help individuals better navigate their careers for a variety of organizations and disciplines. The series will utilize a ‘feminist mentoring approach’ which focuses on empowerment of the mentees with regard to their ability to thrive in gendered/racialized organizations, while dismantling institutional practices that sustain sexist and racist cultures. It relies on a ‘mentoring episode structure’ to offer short high-quality developmental interactions to participants who may or may not already be in a mentoring relationship.
