Through a series of 3-4 webinars, we will explore the rich potential of Feminist Perspectives to inform the conceptualisation and design of research in the social sciences. The series aims to stimulate dialogue between researchers of all stages.

<h2>About the session</h2><p>For many, Intersectionality should not be considered as a separate feminist topic, but rather as a framework and\or concept that infiltrates all areas of feminist thought and analysis. </p><p></p><p>This webinar will:</p><ul><li>Provide an introduction to the history of intersectionality</li><li>Illustrate how this concept, which was generated from within Black feminist thought, is being developed and put to use today</li><li>Ask you to consider whether it should it be used by white feminists and others in ways that include factors other than gender and race such as disabilities, sexualities, social class</li><li>Stimulate debate about the validity of expanding the concept and explore why controversies exist in this field</li><li>Consider the future directions of the concept of intersectionality, given current concerns with decolonising feminist approaches</li><li>Provide a space to reflect on how these ideas around intersectionality might shape our own research</li></ul><p>In addition, the international perspectives, experiences, actions and studies presented in this session will allow us to think about how popular usage has and has not been expanded to other international contexts and to consider its comparative usefulness for conveying the experiences of other ethnic minority and indigenous groups in vastly different global contexts. </p>

<h3>Speakers: </h3><ul><li><strong>Victoria Showunmi </strong>- Victoria  is an Associate Professor at the University College London’s Institute of Education. Her main research interests look at gender identity and race in the context of leadership in addition to Black women and girls’ experience in education and society. Her work is recognized across national and international contexts being the principal and co-principal investigator for five research projects. </li></ul><ul><li><strong>Yuleina Carmona</strong> - Yuleina is part of WIEGO’s Focal Cities Team, a network to investigate the shape of policies towards the informal workforce. She is originally from Venezuela and has spent the last ten years of her life on the move. Her experiences as a migrant, motivated her to undertake a Master Degree in Migration Studies (Université Lille-3, Babes-Bolyai University) with a specialisation in Gender Studies (National Autonomous University of Mexico, UNAM). As a South American feminist and queer activist, among others, Yuleina is actively involved in actions to decriminalise abortion in Latin America</li></ul><ul><li><strong>Emilia Flores Martínez</strong> (Chiwik Tajsal cooperative) - Emilia is a masehual indigenous artisan founder and coordinator of the Chiwik Tajsal artisans’ cooperative. She is part of the Group for Socioecological Action Research (GIASE) with a background in Planning for Rural Development at the Centre for Rural Development Studies (CESDER). As alumni of the Indigenous Peasant University UCI-Red in Mexico, Emilia has brought the academic expertise of interculturality and sustainability to reality by co-founding the Chiwik Tajsal cooperative that provides sustainable incomes to an Indigenous masehuala community of women.</li></ul><ul><li><strong>Camila Kirchner Espejo</strong> (Chiwik Tajsal cooperative) - Camila graduated from Sustainable Development Engineering focusing on social innovation. She joined the Chiwil Tajsal collective of artisans and together with Emilia, consolidated the project cooperative of indigenous communitarian feminism. Located in the North Highlands of Puebla, Mexico, the collective work of the cooperative is aimed at securing autonomy for the women of the locality by promoting traditional handmade artisan textiles, rescuing of the masehual culture and preserving the environment. </li></ul>

<h2>About the webinar series</h2><p>Feminist perspectives have inspired a diverse range of theoretical and methodological innovations in social research over decades. Different forms of feminism have generated new disciplines and sub-disciplines, from women’s studies, masculinities studies and queer studies to feminist security studies and eco-feminism, many of which have emerged from debates and challenges between feminists. </p><p>Feminists have led the way in developing philosophical insights, methodological innovations and analytical tools for researching complex social problems, revealing not only their gendered dimensions but multiple intersecting forms of oppression, inequality and dominance underlying and generating them. Feminist thought has historically evolved within the crucible of social movements and has from time to time been challenged, bifurcated, reshaped and reinvigorated within these movements.</p><p>Meanwhile feminist perspectives continue to inspire activists and contemporary social movements such as the International Women’s Strike, the #MeToo movement, secondary school students’ exposure of rape culture in their schools, the global anti-street harassment movement and women’s environmental movements (to name just a very few). </p>

<p>Through a series of 3-4 webinars, we will explore the rich potential of Feminist Perspectives to inform the conceptualisation and design of research in the social sciences. Over the course of three webinars, we will invite established academics, activists, early career and doctoral researchers to talk about why they are feminists, the forms of feminism that have inspired their work and, crucially, how feminist analytical perspectives have been productive in the conceptualisation, design and conduct of their research. </p>

<p>The webinar series aims to stimulate dialogue between researchers at various stages of their careers and with different degrees of knowledge and commitment to feminist perspectives. While particularly aimed at doctoral researchers, it is open to academics and non-academics from across different disciplines within and beyond the five institutions that make up the South West Doctoral Training Partnership. </p>
