It’s more than a gimmick (one often seen in post-BLAIR WITCH horror films) Kaiser is instead interrogating the nature and suggestion of the documentary form - twisting it against itself, so that FERAL takes on an uneasy reality. Even knowing that the events depicted are contrived, it is easy to fall under FERAL’s spell.Part of the reason is that the events in FERAL could easily be true. Feral children similar to those in the film have been documented in real life; Kaiser is dramatising what is a real-world phenomenon. But otherwise, FERAL works by dint of its making. Kaiser and experienced cinematographer Marc Bellver exploit light and shadow to maximum effect, playing on the grainy effect of faux-found footage - in these moments the film slips entirely into horror mode, having already sunk its claws into its mollified audience.
